Please help me with Baby wise!

My twins are 9 weeks old as of yesterday but they were preemies, born at 31 weeks. My due date was actually yesterday. When can I expect them to start dropping off some of the night time feedings? I have a set routine going for night time and do my best to do the eat/play/sleep however they are still sleeping a lot during the day and have no interest in playing. Our little girl continually gets fussy after her bedtime bottle and will fuss and holler sometimes until the next feeding. Please give me your advice!

Re: Please help me with Baby wise!

  • I did not read/follow baby wise, but My Preston would fuss and holler at night from like 7 to 10 (sometimes as late as 12). I read in Healthy sleep habit happy child that this is a normal thing and will start to go away at 6 weeks past their due date. He stopped this at about 8 or 9 weeks old. They were born at 37 weeks so this was almost exactly 6 weeks past their due date. I was amazed.

I sucks, but the advise in the book I read was just try to keep them comfortable during this time - and wait. Thankfully it was only one of the boys. I don't know what I would have done if it was both...

Just my experience - I know there are others who can give you better Baby Wise advise.

  • sounds like you are doing a great job!  keeping them on a eat/play/sleep is what a lot of people do, and it seems to pay off later.  we didn't stay on schedule and it was ROUGH for a long time.  as far as figuring out days and nights, and sttn fairly consistently- i think it was week 14, which was 7 1/2 past due date.

people kept telling us it would get better, and i just wanted a date on the calendar... like, just tell me WHEN.  it is tough when you bring home preemies cause you will have an extra stretch of time (maybe 9 in your case) of dealing with a certain stage.  but maybe since you are staying on schedule it will make things come together faster.

good luck, and hang in there!

  • we followed babywise with all 3 of our kids- but they were not preemies - which makes a huge difference.  They all STTN at 8w... i would give your babies quite some time before you can expect them to drop night feedings- they have a lot of catching up to do.  I know it's hard- but that's what happens with preemies. • It does sound like you're off to a good start. Bear in mind that for sleep patterns, babies tend to go by their due date rather than their birth date if they were born early. Evening fussiness is common in newborns and generally peaks around 6w (adjusted). After that nighttime sleep gradually starts becoming more "organized" rather than fragmented, and even moreso by 12-16 weeks (from the due date). Hang in there!
