Preemies

Synagis Side Effects?

Hello,

The nurse is coming today to give my little preemie, now 10 weeks or 4 weeks adjusted, the synagis shot.  Those of you who have experience with the shot.......what should I expect for side effects??

Thanks!

Re: Synagis Side Effects?

  • stella had her first shot at 5 months old (2.5 adjusted) & did not experience any side effects at all.

  • DS had his first shot earlier this month.  The only things I noticed were that he seemed a little extra clingy for about 24 hours.  Not necessarily fussy or anything, just wanted to be held.  Not sure if that had anything to do with the shot though.

It also apparently hurts more than other shots.  Based on the way DS acted, I would agree with that.

  • I was just going to post something like this! I was wondering if any babies were particularly fussy after the shot. C&L had their second set on Saturday and Lily has been a hot mess ever since. Fussy, clingy...just not herself. It's gotten a little better but she's still not normal. I was wondering if that happens or if she's just going through a phase. (They got their first set of shots along with their 4 month vaccines so I don't know what caused them to do what!)

  • None for us. Last year he cried for about 30 seconds and it was done.
He's had one this year and he cried pretty good for several minutes (he's also big enough this year to need TWO shots, so I'm sure that contributed.) but again, once he was done crying, it was done.
  • Just that it must burn or hurt a lot, so Olivia WAILED. For a really long time. I'm not looking forward to subsequent shots, although I know she needs them.
  • Thanks ladies. We are waiting on the nurse now. Luckily she is coming to our house to give the shot.......or maybe not lucky, I don't want him to associate pain with his own home....if that makes any sense?! But it will protect him from any germy doctors office!! I will let you know how it goes!
  • DD screamed at her 1st one and the second one she cried for a 10 seconds and was ready to peace out.
  • My boys are the 1 in 100,000 who are actually allergic to the Synagis shot for RSV.  It is rare but it does happen.  Here's the link to my blog where I talk about what happened to us.  Please be observant to your LO for up to 45min after the shot is administered.  Look for site reactions at the injection site and on the arms, legs, hands and feet.  Read the Synagis website for more info on reactions and side effects and above all DO NOT LET THE MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS DISMISS YOUR CONCERNS IF YOU SEE SOMETHING!!  They did this to us and it could have hurt our boys.
