Anyone on Nuvaring and breastfeeding?

My friends doctor put her on Nuvaring, but their website says not to use it while breastfeeding, so was just wondering if this is something common that doctors ignore or if she is seeing an idiot? (I used to see him, and I didn't like him, so I'm trying not to be biased ;))

Re: Anyone on Nuvaring and breastfeeding?

  • My Ob told me that I should only take the mini pill while BFing. But I also did not ask about nuvaring. Sorry, I am no help.

  • I was on Nuvaring prior to getting pregnant.  Check out the link below.  Nuraring contains estrogen.  And any estrogen containing birth control should be avoided while breastfeeding--it can reduce your supply.  Something I would never want to risk doing!

You only want to be on progestin only birth control while nursing.  This website lists Depo as being ok.  So, after my own research I really wanted to do depo and instead of the mini-pill.  I had been on depo before--loved it and didn't want to have to worry about remembering to take a pill every day.  But when I went in for my post-delivery appt. I asked about depo and my doctor really didn't want me on it and wanted me to do the mini-pill.  So, I went with this recommendation and have been on the minipill every since and am still breastfeeding.
