Every child with Sensory Processing Disorder is different, different things bother them.  But I will give you a few examples of what my sons issues are.

First, I thought he had issues since he was an infant.  At a few months old I would bring him into the bathroom with me, in his bouncy seat while I got ready.  When I turned on the water to brush my teeth he would scream.  i had to sponge bathe him until he was about 3 months old because he would scream when I put him in the bath.  He slept in a swing for the first 5 months.

As a toddler /preschool age he was constantly seeking out body imput.  he squeezes me constantly, rolls on top of his sister, crashes into things.  He gets very overstimulated, almost like a child with hyperactivity and I have to give him "squeeze hugs" where I wrap him tight in a blanket and hug him very tightly.   This calms him down.  he still does not tolerate loud sounds, like trucks, trains, car horns.  Also is very sensitive to smell...he hates my lip gloss or gum smell.

Not saying that I think your ds has Sensory issues because from what you described in the doctor's office sounds like typical toddler apprehension to me.  But if he did, it is not so bad.  It is challenging on some days, but very managable.  I think that doctor you saw was way too quick to judge.

  • Thanks so much for sharing!  You sound like a great mom and that you have things under control!  I wasn't so much worred about the sensory issues- I used to work for EI so I was familiar with the therapy techniques etc. for these issues and maybe I saw a lot of mild cases like your son's....I was more worried when she had to bring up Asperger's.  My son doesn't show any of the sensitivites that you mentioned for your son.  I am however, going to follow up on all of this with his reg. pedi.  I guess I just want to make sure I have all of my bases covered!  Thanks for your reassuring words and for sharing!
