My MFM says I am going to have these weekly now (starting today) and I was just wondering what to expect. I know they will see if the baby reacts to stress, but what sort of stimuli will they do? I'm not even sure if its a high-risk test or a normal test since I see the MFM for full OB coverage. I forgot to ask him (he said something that irriated me, so I just wanted to leave the appointment, but that's for another post!) so I'm throwing it out there. TIA!
Re: Anyone had an NST/AFI?
If they're wanting to stress the baby in the NST, usually they'll put a little buzzer next to your belly and see if heart rate changes in response to getting buzzed. AFI is amniotic fluid index... so they're just going to measure your fluid levels.
I just had my first one yesterday. I'll be having them twice/week. For the NST, you sit in a recliner for about 20 minutes with 2 monitors hooked up to your belly. They keep an eye on the baby's heartrate and a machine measures for contractions. Completely painless for you and LO. NST is non-stress test so they won't do anything to stress the baby. If the baby is not active, they may use a buzzer to get him/her moving. Here's more info:

I have to have both, starting around 34-36 weeks, weekly. The non-stress test is literally that.... they put the external fetal monitor belt on you to measure baby's HR, and one to measure if you're having any contractions. Then they wait and see that the baby's HR goes up with movements he makes and any contractions you might have. If the baby isn't moving and seems asleep, they might use the buzzer to wake him/her up. I'll be hacing them because I have GD.
The AFI is to make sure there's still enough amnitoric fluid in there.
