Babies measuring TOO big??

I had an ultrasound today at the peri's office and they were concerned because baby a is in the 95th percentile and b is in the 80th.  Anyone had a similar experience?  She said the first thing they want to do is my sugar test early (I go tomorrow).  Any clue what else it could be?  TIA...

Re: Babies measuring TOO big??

  • do people in your family tend to have big babies?

GD is usually to blame for babies being big... but some people just have big babies - I had big babies... Griffin was a month early and was 7lb 4oz (they said he would have been 9lbs if went to term)... Gibby was 2w early and a twin, and was just shy of 8lbs... Gray was 6lb 6oz- my only 'average' baby.

  • I had the same problem, right around the same time frame.

I had an early sugar test at 7 weeks and my sugar levels were great, and I think because of this they weren't rushing me to have my sugars checked again until 28 weeks - which was already scheduled.  Turned out my sugar levels were great then too.  So no issues with that.

My peri told me that sometimes it is not unusually for this to happen, and that they can tend to slow down in growth around the 3rd tri.  Mine did not, but they weren't showing any signs of stress.

He did say that it would just add another risk to my pregnancy and that they would have to watch me more closely.  He also mentioned that this could mean taking the babies earlier then we had talked about.  I never really got a chance to ask him why, but I told him flat out, unless he could tell me their life was at risk we weren't taking them early for their size.

He stated that we would watch and monitor and make the decision together.

At every U/S I was told that these were big babies and were in the 95-98th percentile.

They were born at 38 weeks via c/s weighting 6 lbs 9 oz & 7 lbs 9 oz.  I can't imagine what they would have been at 40 weeks.  My singleton weighed in at 7 lbs 4 oz - so IMO my boys were right around her weight and on track.

Some baby/babies are just big and that is the way the grow.  My DH is 6'5 and a big guy, I am 5'4 - it seems both my DD & DS's are taking after their father as they continue to be big babies/kids.

See what happens after you get your sugars tested and then talk to your doctor in detail about what this means and the outcomes just so you are clear and on the same page.

  • I just had the same thing happen last week. Both my babies were measuring big for twins  - 65% percentile and have alot of amniotic fluid. The peri's office scared the heck out of me and said I needed the glucose challenge ASAP. I took it monday and passed with flying colors. My reg. OB said they are just big healthy babies and they have more fluid because there are two of the in there!

    GOOD LUCK!

  • I haven't had the twins measured yet, but my DD was born at 9 lbs.  I had passed the GD test no problems.  They checked her sugars for 24 hours after delivery, and they were great.

    I just have big babies.

  • Thanks for all of your encouragement/advice.  Babies in my family are typically avaerage size (7-8lbs) but hopefully they are just going to be big and healthy!!

  • Someone once told me this (not sure if it is true or not), but typically your babies are around the size you were when you are born.

Again, no doctor told me this a friend did and I am not a 100% sure if it is true or not.

Don't know but 7-8 pound babies to me are a pretty good size!
