Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Why get so offended by the word "fat"?

I don't really understand this.  Unless you have body image issues yourself and are hypersensitive to any mention of weight, I don't get why some of you are so up in arms when people reference size with your babies.

They are not calling your kids unhealthy.  They are not saying you are a bad parent.  (Unless they are, and then that's sketch.)  But mostly, I think it's all meant as meaningless jibberjabber.

Why does EVERYTHING have to be so touchy.

  • Here, here!!!

I think what it boils down to is people's insecurities about whether they're doign the right thing by their child. If someone comments on their chunky monkey/skinny-mini then it just reaffirms that they might not know what they're doing. I personally don't subscribe to this theory but I think that's what the general issue is.

  • BECAUSE!  if i am not offended by something and ranting and raving about every.fvkcing.thing then i have nothing to live for.

    NOTHING!

  • For me personally, the word has had a very negative connotation in my family. It's just a personal thing. I don't ever want my daughter hearing someone call her "fat," regardless of her age.
  • DH and I are both overweight and unless someone calls my baby fat with a tone of disgust it does NOT bother me.

    I agree.

My stepdad makes fun of fat people all the time, alot of people make fun of fat people all the time. It's a very negative word because of the meaning behind it. It's an insult. I've never seen fat being used positively while describing a person.

That's the way PG's cookies crumble. You don't have to like it.

I seriously think this is true for some people.  It boggles my mind.  The purpose of my life is to mock the purpose of those people.  Much more worthy of a goal!

  • I was just wondering this. I love, love chunky babies and I think they are meant to be that way.

Maybe they mean "p-h" phat.  You know?  Like, "That chick is phat!"  A ha ha ha ha.

Honestly though, you are setting yourself up for a long life of being insulted if you take offense at words like "fat."  I salute your right to crusade, but that's a tough thing to martyr yourself for.

  • Yup. They're babies. They're supposed to be fat! Even my skinny minny little boy (who frankly, needs to pudge up) has thigh rolls.

I`m with you.  People call DS chunky/fat all the time and to me, it's a compliment.  I swear, people find a way to be offended by anything and everything.

Then I'll be insulted! I just don't think it's very pc to call anyone fat.

Hopefully people's manners are better than that.

Because "fat" is a blunt and rude word.  Like if you're being polite when you write a description of someone who's overweight, you say they are "heavyset" or "large-boned" or "substantial" or "husky".  If you're being less polite, you say they are "fat" or "obese" or many other words ranging from mildly insulting to very insulting.

    Well said, mama!

Some posters are saying even the word "chunky" would upset them.  Any allusion to weight at all seems to be off-limits.

Personally, I find all your synonyms (heavyset, large-boned, substantial, and husky) are pretty negative, too.  It feels even more awkward when I see people trying to tiptoe around the elephant in the room. (Ho ho ho, ill-advised pun intended)

  • To me, it isn't so much "fat" that ruffles my feathers, but "fatass".  I wouldn't call my baby bitchass, dumbass, jackass, etc., either.  I am probably too sensitive, but I think of them as derogatory terms.

Hmm  Nope. No martyr. Just not acceptable in my house or with my kid.
