how long does it take for your PEDIATRICIAN to return a call?

again, sorry for all these lame questions, girls but I am a very nervous 1st time mom and you have been such a great support system for me these first few weeks.  Thank you all so much!

I left a message at my doctor's office and am just wondering what is a good guage of a callback time for non-emergency issues?

Also, he is a sole practitioner and a bit on the conservative side (I'm still debating as to whether or not to use him but I'm trying him out) and when I called earlier, I got a busy signal.  I didn't even know busy signals were still used.  Finally got the voicemail and left a message but I just don't know what is a good "average" callback time.

  • If I have a non-emergent question it can take a few hours for mine to call back but that doesn't bug me. A more serious question means a call back within a few minutes to an hour.

Sometimes I get a busy signal too and I use a big practice. I just keep calling until I can get through. I chalk it up to a bunch of people calling all at once.

  • I called my pedi last week since my LO had a crying fit for a couple hours one night and she called me back within an hour/hour and a half.

  • My Pedi office returns calls at lunch and COB, unless it is an emergency...?

  • I use a larger practice but the two times I called with questions, one of the nurses or NPs called me back within 20 minutes. I have never had a question that I felt demanded speaking to the doctor so I am not sure how long that would have taken....

Oh... I've never spoken to the pediatrician herself either. I always get the triage nurse on the line and she tells me if I need to make an appt or to come in ASAP or whatever.

  • Medical Assistant or Pediatrician calls me back usually within a few hours.

  • The nurse usually calls back within 2-3 hours.  However, the few times that I have called, it was for non-emergent issues.  Good luck!
