Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Working Out after D&C

Hi all and Happy Monday,

Has anyone started working out again after their loss? I had this really wierd revalation hours after my surgery. I decided I wanted to get in really great shape...I don't know why. It was almost like I wanted to get in control of something since I couldn't control the miscarriage situation.

I ran for the first time on the treadmill tonight for 20 minutes. I am already sore!!! Before we got pregnant I was running everyday. It amazes me how fast my body can get out of shape.

Have a great night everyone! I am going to be sore and lazy and watch Monday Night Football.

Re: Working Out after D&C

  • I have the same sentiments! I'm still bleeding pretty heavily so I'm a bit nervous about working out too hard but I want to start getting back in shape too.

  • When was your D&C?  You need to take it easier for at least a couple of weeks.  Walking is okay, but it is not advisable to do a strenuous workout right away.  Even though it is considered a minor surgical procedure, it was still surgery.  Give your body some time to heal.

I started working out about 2 weeks after D&C.  I walked on the treadmill at my normal pace, but I lessened the incline.  I am now back to my normal workout because I got the "all clear" from my OB.

  • Like the pp said, you have to wait a couple of weeks before strenuous activity. My dr said no working out until post-op appt.

  • It must be a common revelation.  I did the same thing.  I think its a control issue as well.  Almost like I'm telling myself, "I might not be pregnant, but I look good!"  hahaha, I don't know, but getting in shape is on my top list right now.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I feel the same way.  A few days after we lost our LO I immediately felt like I wanted to get in the best shape of my life, not for vanity sake, but because I want to be as strong as I can possibly be for the next pregnancy, if I'm lucky enough to become pregnant again. Like other posters, I think it's a control thing - there's so little we can control right now that, at the very least, we can do this.

My Dr. did say that I should take it easy for the next couple of weeks.  I'd start out really light and go from there once you get the all-clear.

I felt this same way, about getting in shape and getting control of something.  It hasn't worked out quite as planned.  I used to workout about 5 days a week, so I am building back up, VERY slowly.

I seem to be in control of eating a lot of crap these days and that doesn't help.  I need something to kick me in the ass to lose the weight I gained during pg and since and stop me from eating so bad.

Good luck to you.  Sounds like you're on the right track.  I hope I get there soon.

  • I feel the exact same way. I wanted to walk on the treadmill this weekend, but was having some spotting so I waited to talk to the nurse yesterday. She suggested waiting until my follow up appointment and really letting my body rest these couple of weeks after the d&c (mine was last week).

  • Thank you for the reminder to slow down:-) I think I may be getting ahead of myself too. I just want to be completely better emotionally and physically!! And I need to keep reminding myelf that it has only been 1 week. I have my follow up on the 31st. I will follow the, "you have to walk before you can run" lesson.

It is really nice to see that other woman feel the same way. Sometimes I feel so alone in all of this. Thanks Ladies.

These are my thoughts exactly! Not vanity, but as strong as possble. I was so worried about miscarrying that I switched from running to walking when I got pregnant. I really noticed how fast my body got out of shape.

    Good luck with everything!

  • I started again 3 weeks after my D&E and have noticed I am very out of shape. Hoping to get back to myself soon! Take it easy on yourself.

  • I did the same thing after my D&C.  Made a vow to get back in shape as fast as possible...  I'm not one for "taking it easy" even though I know I should.  My doctor told me not to exercise until 48 hours after my procedure.  I worked out a lot before the procedure though.  I am now 3 weeks post D&C and starting to work out like I did before but haven't gone swimming or running hard since I am waiting for my post op tomorrow to get the ok. It's amazing how my body has stopped craving junk food now that I'm not pregnant anymore.  Good luck!
