Postpartum Depression

how long does PPD last?

This may be a dumb question, but I'm really concerned for a friend.  She had twins about a month ago.  She's in pretty bad shape.  She's normally very outgoing and the life of the party.  She's having troubles just getting out of bed.  She told me she thinks she has PPD (I agree), but she just wants to wait it out.  This concerns me.  I'm worried about her.  Should I press her to go to the doctor?  Her mom will be there for another week, but then she's going home (4 hours away) to get ready for Christmas.

  • see my post below on the Myth of "wishing" PPD away. It isn't something you can wish away, it's a chemical imbalance in the brain and most times can only be treated by medication. She needs to see about getting help BEFORE it becomes an issue, if she waits it's a much longer recovery, worse symptoms, a worse outcome in general.

  • PPD can pop up anytime in the first year - it needs to be treated to "go away"

Talk to your friend about seeing her doc - maybe offer to watch the babies for her while she goes. You're a good friend for being concerned - I hope she listens to you and gets help.

  • You need to have a heart-to-heart with her.

I honestly thought I had the normal "baby blues". Then my mom finally pulled me aside and told me she thought I needed to see my doctor. I was shocked. She said she'd seen signs since the day I gave birth, and they just kept getting worse.
My point is that your friend might not realize how bad off she is. You need to tell her.

Oh, and to answer your actual question, as you can see by my ticker, my DD is 14 mo, and I am still being treated for PPD.
