3rd Trimester

Who has already gained more than planned?

I've gained 30 pounds now!  Ughhhh....I was hoping to only gain 30 the whole pregnancy and definitely not more than 35, but with 8 weeks left I am afraid I may exceed the 35 pounds.. My doctor did say some people only gain 5 pounds at the end and some people actually lose so maybe I'll get lucky.  Just curious who else is in the same boat?  I hope breastfeeding takes most of it off quickly and the abdominal wrap I bought for post partum!  I hope my butt fits back into my pants someday!

Re: Who has already gained more than planned?

  • Yup, but I'm just so happy when I can eat and I don't get sick that I really don't care if I gain 80lbs at this point.  It is a lot different than I thought it was going to be.

  • My goal was 20 (I was over weight to start!), and at my 30 week appt, I was up to 17. Damn.
  • I decided to not have a weight 'goal'. I just wanted to survive pregnancy and whatever I had to eat in order to make myself feel good, I planned to eat.

I'm up 11 lbs (don't shoot me) but I had such horrible m/s for the first 16 weeks, food just wasn't my friend. I'd gladly be up 60 lbs if it meant that I didn't feel so crappy for so long at the beginning of this!  I was also not small to begin with, so I guess us fluffy girls don't always gain as much anyways.

  • I was hoping to only gain about 25lbs (I was a little on the heavy side for my taste to begin with) and I was at 29lbs at my 30 week appointment. I go on Thursday for my 32 week appointment so I'm hoping I haven't gained like, 10 more lbas or something.
  • Ditto.  I lost a couple of pounds during first tri (from m/s), gained like crazy during second, and gained a moderate amount for the early part of third.  So I'm up a total of 27 pounds so far.  I wanted to stick in the 25-30 range for the entire pregnancy, but that's probably not looking likely.  And there's no way I'm going to exercise any willpower and deny any of my cravings.  Smile  What if LO needs all of those carbs and ice cream, even after the healthy meal I try to give him?

Like you said, I hear BF takes it off pretty quickly.  I'm banking on that.

  • I think a lot of people hope to only gain "such and such" amount of weight. If you've been eating right and taking care of yourself, your shouldn't worry about your weight gain. Plus don't forget that a lot of it can be water weight and blood volume. I was told to gain 30-35 lbs and I'm at 35 lbs now. My feet and hands have swollen up so bad you can leave an imprint of your finger in my skin for like 2 mins. I used to watch the scale every week. I stopped because I figure as long as I'm doing what I should, then I"m good.

I'm up 30 also.  I notice the extra padding in my butt and thighs.  Of course, my face is rounder too.  My doc is a saint and keeps telling me that my weight "looks good" so I'm not too worried about it.

I did have a conversation with my thighs in the bathroom mirror this morning.  Told them not to get too comfortable, because I'm coming after them after Junior's born.

  • I'm at 32 right now, which is more than I had expected.  My doctor is fine with where I am and I've had a very healthy pregnancy so, it's hard to complain about a few extra pounds. Like you, I'm counting on breastfeeding to really help with the initial post-partum weight loss.

  • I've gained 37 pounds which is deifnitely more than I wanted to gain but at some point I realized that I was going to gain what I was going to gain.  I have not used pg as an excuse to pig out, eat huge quantities of food or anything like that and at the end of second tri I gained 7 pounds between 3.5 weeks and 8 pounds over the next 4 weeks even though I was eating good.  I was soooooooooooo upset-sat in my car and bawled my eyes out but then I kind of stopped gaining too much and realized that my body was going to do what it was going to do.  I haven't gained much at all since about 32/33 weeks or so and I've eaten worse in the past 2 weeks, since Thanksgiving than I have the whole pregnancy and have only gained 1 pound-it just makes no sense so I've stopped caring-what's done is done, ya know?

  • My Dr wanted me to gain 15-25 pounds and so far I have gained 23.  I gained most my weight during 3rd tri.  I am hoping I lose a couple pounds these last 3 weeks.  I guess we will see.
  • Well, I have you all beat! haha  I have gained 45lbs.  I am tall so I hide it well, or so I have been told.  But I only hoped to gain 35.  I lost in first tri and gained RAPIDLY in second tri.  I think I was so happy I could eat I just didn't care.  The good news is that LO is a big baby and already weighs 8.4lbs (estimate) so I can knock that right off the top!!
  • I don't really have goal or anything.. if I did, I guess I'd say, "The least possiable!!"  I'm averaging about a pound a week. Up 30 @ 30... But it's not really fair with thanksgiving and christmas!! If I stick to 40, I'll be VERY happy!! ::please please::

I only wanted to gain 30 for the entire pg and I am at 20+ right now.  People keep telling me how great I look and how I'm "all belly," but I am freaked out.

I am wondering if my doc is going to say something at my 28 week visit this week...I don't want "the talk!"

But as PP has said, I will be coming after my thighs and butt w/ a vengeance soon enough!

  • Yeah, I've gained about 55 at this point Embarrassed, so I don't really want to hear all of the "30 already!!" stuff... I know I can get it off quickly, but it doesn't make me feel any less like this:

  • I have gained about 35lbs and am pretty fine with it. My face just started looking bloated and gross haha But whatever I am at the end.

I expected 20, but after passing that very quickly I gave up on caring. I like being able to eat again, and will enjoy it while I can! haha?

  • Back in 1st Tri when I was naive, my goal was to only gain 35lbs. total. I'm now up to 45 lbs. I've definitely learned with this pregnancy that plans go out the window and I'm just letting my body do it's thing!
  • ::raises chubby hand::  I was up about 25 pounds as of 28w4d.  I was really hoping to gain about 25-30 the entire time and that is obviously not going to happen.  Now I'm terrified of reaching 40 or beyond.  I was really petite pre-pregnancy too so it's extra scary to have all this extra weight.  At least we have a few months before bikini season to attempt to get back to normal!

  • My Dr's goal for me was 30 lbs for the whole 40 weeks. At my 34 week appt, I had gained 35. I'm expecting to go over 40 now.

There's been a lot of research that proves gaining 35+ pounds is healthier for mom and baby. Less toxemia, better birth weights, decreased premature babies, less malnutrition, etc.

I don't think there is any "ideal" weight gain for any of us during pregnancy. Everyone is different, different body types, different nutritional needs, and all that. As long as we're eating a balanced diet and giving our baby what they need, I don't think weight gain is something to stress about.

  • ::raises hand:: I wanted to keep under 32 lbs but I'm already at 28 so I think that goal is out the window

  • I thought I'd lose but my activity's way down because of my sciatic so I've stayed about even, maybe gained about 5
  • I'm up 40 pounds at 37.5 weeks.  Not what I had planned.  But hey, I'm 5'8 and it seems to be fairly spread out so... oh well :)

  • i hoped to max out at 30-35 and I am at 32 right now - hit that mark at 34 weeks so I figured that I'd end up at 38 if i gained a pound a week. BUT, like a lot of people have said, I have actually stayed the exact same over the past two weeks.  I actually find it harder to eat now that my belly is leaving little room for food and making the reflux much worse!

one thing that i also think is help is a piece of advice that my BFF gave me.  She said that in the last 4-6 weeks of pregnancy, she gave up one item per week that she had allowed herself ONLY because she was pregnant. that way after you deliver, you don't have to conquer the whole thing at once.  First week I gave up my excessive pizza/calzone consumption (i was eating it like 3x/wk!), then last week I went back from regulr cal drinks to my former sugar free drinks.  This week i am giving up excessive sweets (I can still eat some, but I am trying to watch it the way I used to).  I figure that that one will take me 2 weeks to accomplish!  And the last thing is going to be giving up white flour products and returning to whole wheat products.  I saved that for last because right now, the white bread stuff still helps to control my reflux, so I kind of need it.

  • I've gained way more than I thought I would. I've always had trouble gaining weight, so I thought it would be the same during pregnancy. Nope! I've gained 40 lbs at this point. I honestly don't really care. I could've put on a few pounds before I got pregnant, so I'm actually kind of hoping I don't lose all of the weight after LO is born. I do want to get back to working out though! My feet are so hugely swollen none of my tennis shoes fit at this point.

  • OB said a goal of 25-35 would be good for me. For whatever reason I was hoping for just 20 total. I'm up 25, so... so much for that! It's hard because so much of the weight has been rapidly put on during this last trimester.
