Cramping in First Trimester - Need Advice

When I was at work Friday night I started to experience some moderate cramping (more than just the normal, but not doubling me over), which turned into more rhythmic contraction-like cramping after I got home.  It goes away after I lie down, but comes right back the second I stand up, or sneeze, or sometimes even when I change positions.  It continued this way though the night.  Sat morning I called my office's on call.  He said that my uterus is growing at such a rapid rate that any added stress or strain could cause it to start cramping.  He said that because of my history of m/c, and the fact that my job requires me to be on my feet for 8+ hours (I'm a chef) that I shouldn't work Sat. but could go back Sun if it stopped.  Well it didn't stop so I didn't go into work, but I realized that he didn't say what to do if it didn't stop.

I called the on call doc on Sunday who said that this is normal and to go about my daily business and "have fun with my pregnancy".  The guy was a kind of a jerk and it seemed like I was inconveniencing him.  He didn't give me much of an opportunity to even explain what I was experiencing before interrupting me, much less what I do for a living, or my previous history.  I've got a call into my doctor today to see what her take on the situation is, but in the mean time I was wondering if any of you ladies have experienced anything similar, and if so what did your doc do?

Re: Cramping in First Trimester - Need Advice

  • I cramped almost constantly with my DD for the first tri.  I haven't had that this time, but I chalk it up to my uterus having been stretched out once before.

I hope your doc can provide some insight for you.

  • While I can't speak to your past history and on your feet job, i can tell you that the cramps I had in the first trimeseter were beyond any cramping I ever felt in my life.  They would wake me up at night, they would almost lay me out everytime they happen.  Now, I have very mild cramping when i got my period, so maybe that it was strong in comparison to that, but boy were they bad - doubled over in bed nuts.  Everything was fine with me at each appointment throughout the first tri.  I did not have a job on my feet, so it was a little easier for me.  I guess what I would say to you, is it could be very normal for your pregnancy as it was for mine, but I would do your best to listen to your main dr (not the moron from Sunday) and try to take it easy as much as possible.  I know with a job, that isn't always easy to do and I don't know if you are able to not work for a while - but if you can't be off work, try to cut back, or stay off your feet when you aren't at work.
  • I agree with pps, I had horrible, menstrural like cramps for my entire first trimester. I don't know how many times I went to the bathroom fully expecting to see blood. However, your doc should not be such a jerk about it, and if you're not feeling well, you should definitely try and take it easy.
