Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does this drive anyone else nuts, or am I a freak?

I'm definitely going to risk sounding a little crazy obsessive here...but oh well!  DS has tons and tons of toys, and lots of them have smaller components that go with them---like the little people, or shapes that go in the shape sorter, blocks, the rings from the stacking rings, the "eggs" for his farm, etc.

It drives me crazy when all the little toys get all mixed up and some end up with his toys in the basement, some upstairs in the living room, and some in his room....so he'll have one part of a toy upstairs, and part of it downstairs, so he never really gets to "use' the toys for what they are supposed to do because none of the pieces are together.

I don't know why this drives me so insane because he obviously doesn't know the difference, but today I actually went through ALL of his toys and put all the million little pieces where they belonged. It will stay that way for maybe a day lol.

I think I'm just crazy. Or it's the nesting instinct kicking in. Please tell me there's SOMEONE else that is bothered by this...

  • I am constantly bothered by this. It was a nightmare when I worked at a daycare because I would have to restrain myself from getting irritated. When the kids would nap, I would go around and obsessively put every little piece in its place.

I do it with DD's toys too.

  • I am with you!!

I always try to put all the pieces back each night!

  • It drives me crazy too! One part of a toy was lost for several weeks. You should have seen the happy dance I did when I found it behind the entertainment center. I looked for it every day!
  • Me too...and I do the same thing with Brendans toys about once a week.  And every week my husband laughs at me and shakes his head lol.

We've got to be twins.  I was the exact same way when I worked at a daycare.  We had plastic bins for everything to go in (and there were a lot), and every free moment I had I would put all the pieces in the right spot.  It would drive me nuts if I came in in the morning and the afternoon teachers had just thrown everything together.

I even got rid of a lot of toys (they had PLENTY already) if they were supposed to belong to a set, but the rest of the toys in the set had broken or were nowhere to be found.

Needless to say, I am the exact same way with my own child's toys.

  • If you're crazy, then I am too!  I hate that! When DH cleans up he just throws everything completely mismatched wherever.  When I clean up, I always put things with the correct sets.  Who wants to play farm with no cows?

  • Phew--glad I'm not alone!

  • I try to keep the pieces together too. What really bugs me is when the shapes from his shape sorters get lost, or end up some place random and not with the shape sorter boxes.
  • I'm the same way.  And I also know at all times which toys have missing pieces.  It drives me crazy.
  • It drives me crazy too.  Actually, toys with little parts drive me crazy.  I'd be much happier if all of his toys were just one, big piece.
  • Oh that drives me insane! At naptime and bedtime I run around and put everything 'back together' and put everything where it goes. I always know when a piece is missing, too and it drives me nuts until I find it.

Like PP's I worked at daycare and I was obsessed about keeping toys together! Needless to say, my room was always very neat and picked up!

  • I gave up on this because I'm too tired after work, but DH is a SAHD, so he puts everything back in its place during naps and again at night. He even has a certain arrangement for everything. It drives him nuts when he can't find some piece or other and then when he does find it, he discovers something different has gone missing in the meantime. All of DS toys are in our living room, though so it's all there somewhere.

I did freak out once because two pieces of a stacking toy went missing and I was sure my cousin's kid took them home, and what do you know - he did! I actually found the balls to ask her about it and she never got back to me so I assumed I was wrong. I was shocked when my mom came home with them one day after visiting my aunt. I was never so happy to see something so trivial in my life!

  • I sort them, too. Probably 2-3x a week I sort them out. I actually have some of her things in boxes with lids on a shelf that I pull down to play with and then put back to keep them from getting all mixed up. And I am by no means a neat freak!

You're definitely not alone!  My friend suggested a good idea to me.  If you buy new sheets or pillowcases - use the zippered bags that they come in to store toys with many pieces.  This has totally kept me sane.

  • My family members make fun of me because I am so obsessive about dd's toys.  We were missing the green peas from the Fisher Price Laugh and Learn shopping cart and so I ordered a new set from the FP website.  I am tempted to throw out my Leap Frog Fridge Phonics because I believe dd threw out the B and they don't sell spare letters on their website.  It drives me absolutely crazy.

I do this at least once a day. It's a futile battle. The only good thing is that our house is only one level, so at least everything is on the same floor!

  • I try to find all the pieces, put everything back together, and sort the toys each night after DS goes to bed.  Everything is on the same floor though, so it's not too bad.  Usually we're missing at least one little ball & it drives me crazy till I find it!

My mom does the same thing with the toys at her house.  She's been missing a stacking ring for months & a shape from the sorter and still cannot find them anywhere.  I'm convinced that the cat took them & stashed them! :)

  • Not only do I do it...DD does it.  After she finishes a book, she'll put it back in one of the book cubby's...food goes in the cart, pots/plates go in the basket.  I wonder if she'll be OCD like my dad...
  • I am currently anxiety-ridden due to 3 missing blocks.  Their empty spots in the container are taunting me "mwahahaha you will never find us! NEVER!"

So no, you are most definitely not alone!

  • Yep, drives me crazy too!
  • that owuld drive me nuts but it's easier for me because 95% of his toys are in the family room and he is not allowed to take his toys out of that room.

  • Yes! I am the same way. Drives me CRAZY!!

  • Yay!  I am not the only one!  I have to make sure I have all the pieces or it really bothers me.  SIL watched DD one day at her house and I gave her a few toys so she could play.  Why I thought it would all come back together, I don't know but there were pieces missing and I still have not gotten them back!!  It drives me batty!

  • it makes me twitch. i separate things with baskets and get SO BOTHERED when they are in the wrong ones.

  • Drives me nuts. I cannot stand things misplaced and unorganized. I have a toy organizer for DDs room and in the living room I have baskets. I also get that way with bottles/sippies and clothes. I hate anything missing or mismatched.
