Multiples

Who here had twins that shared a placenta but had separate sacs?

I'm just curious to know if your twins are identical (if you know).  We were told at one of our early u/s's that our girls share a placenta and there was about a 20% chance they are identical, but we wouldn't know until after they are born.

I haven't done any research on this.  I just wanted to see what others have experienced.  We don't care either way.  I'm just curious. Thanks!

I had four mature follicles at the time of our IUI, so I've always just thought that three fertilized, but who knows.

Re: Who here had twins that shared a placenta but had separate sacs?

  • good question! The triplet mom I just met IRL had been told that her girls were fraternal b/c they had separate sacs and placentas. But they looked so much alike at birth that she had their DNA tested and confirmed that they were identical. crazy!

I've always been told mine are fraternal too, and since we transferred 4 embryos I'm going to continue to assume that's the case.

congrats on being almost 31 weeks!

  • If they share a placenta I'm pretty sure they are identical. I've never heard of fraternal twins that share a placenta, but maybe I'm wrong.

  • They're positive it's a shared placenta and not two that fused? My boys' placentas fused--the nurse told me at delivery that there was just one placenta--but they are most definitely fraternal! :)

  • The MFM said shared. I see him again tommorrow, so I'm going to ask again.
  • i had triplets that did.

do you have early u/s pics? it's usually pretty obvious from those.

  • My twins share a placenta but have their own sacs.  My peri who I've seen since our first tri screening at 13 weeks was very clear and has always said that they are identical.  He said that the egg split within the first three days which is why they are in their own sacs.  I assume he knows what he is talking about but it makes me wonder because when we had our first u/s at 11 weeks and found out it was twins they said two sacs and two placentas and so I have always wondered if perhaps it fused.  My peri is clear and that's what we have gone with so I hope he is right!  I guess we will see when I deliver!
  • based on that picture, i'd be surprised if any two of them were sharing a placenta. those look like pretty thick divisions.

this is what two of mine looked like at 12 weeks (on the right). you can't really see any dividing line.

that said, certainly if they split early enough, they could still be identical, but they'd have their own placentas.

  • Our girls share a placenta but have separate sacs. Our MFM is confident that they are identical. I have heard of placentas fusing together too.  I guess we'll find out when they are born!
  • My boys have 1 placenta and 2 sacs. It took a few u/s's to see the membrane between them, but after a8 weeks they saw it for sure.

  • I guess we'll have to wait and see.  Thanks for the replies!
  • My girls had one placenta and their own amnio sacs. They are ID (thnx, Affliated Genetics :P)

We didn't know when they were born and since it's not medically necessary to know, the hospital didn't check anything. We did a DNA test when they were 11m old :)

  • Our girls are identical. They were in their own sacs and shared a placenta. They tested my placenta after the girls were born via c-section. When they were babies I could see them being identical but now not at all. They are totally different.
