Formula and BF'ing -- please help!

I am having to formula feed as well as breastfeed.  Had a breast infection and am still not making much milk even after prescription meds.  :(  I was wondering if anyone else's LO has trouble with gas and upset tummy after using Enfamil powdered formula?  If so, what do you do to help soothe them.  I have been using the Mylacon drops before every feeding but it doesn't seem to help.  Thanks for the help!

  • I'm not using Enfamil, but have you tried Gripe Water?  I've used that and mylicon with mixed results.  I find that the Gripe Water works the best if given directly out of the dropper.  Other then that, make sure when you feed out of the bottle that it is held at an angle that the nipple part is full of the formula and there isn't any air in it (this is in regards to when you get towards the end of the bottle).  DS2 has been gassy with both kinds of formula I've tried.  You could also try a different formula too.

  • Enfamil was actualy what helped DS's gas. It could just be a transition period if u just started formula. Try peddling his feet to get the gas out and gripe water, i swear by it !!
  • We were having the same problem, but our pediatrician recommended Enfamil Gentleease.  It is much gentler on him and we haven't had a problem since we switched it over.
  • I went from Premium to Gentlease and I didn't notice a difference - other than it digested way too fast for him and he was ALWAYS hungry.

I did just try RTF today of the Premium and he's been a completely different baby.  No gas or fussiness.  Looks like that's what I'll be sticking with.

  • we're doing the same thing and we had to switch to Enfamil Gentlease, the regular Enfamil/Similac has waay too much iron in it and it was causing horrendous gas and as a result a screaming baby. The Gentlease has been a lifesaver for us, and we use Dr. Browns bottles which cut down on swallowed air, and then Mylicon, the combo of all 3 is making the gas manageable at this point.

  • I was told not to use powdered formula on babies less than 4 months old because it isn't sterile, but also because of the bubbles. That might be causing some gas.
