DCs who have had strep throat

DD had a fever of 101 all through the night yesterday.  This morning, pedi told us she has strep throat and gave her antibiotics. She was happy and in good spirits all day, and then crashed an hour earlier than her normal bedtime.

If your DC has had strep,

1.  how long did fever last

2. what temperature

I'm just nervous b/c we never really had to deal with a fever this high before, just low grade temps. during teething.  At what number on the thermometer do I bring her into emergency room?

Re: DCs who have had strep throat

  • DD's fever broke about 24 hours after the start of her antibiotics.  It was between 101-102 before then.  Our pedi said to bring her in or go to the ER if it hit 103.

Hope your DD feels better soon!

  • Ds has had strep twice. He's had a fever with strep and with a virus of 105. Even at 105, they don't send us to the emergency room. The elevation of the fever doesn't mean she's more sick than with a lower temp. A fever is just the body's way of fighting off the infection. Are you giving her tylenol and motrin? We don't typically give either unless his temp hits 102 or unless he's really uncomfortable. You aren't trying to make the fever go away...it's helping her get better!

There's nothing the ER can do to bring down a temp that you can't do at home (dress lightly or in just a diaper, lukewarm baths, etc).

Just talked to advice nurse who told me similar things.  My DH is such a worrier though, he's beside himself here and wants to go to ER.
