Sleep sack vs. gown?

I know the sleep sack is closed on the bottom and the gown is open...any other differences? Pros and cons?

Re: Sleep sack vs. gown?

  • Gowns are great for very very newborn (less to zip, button, etc.) Sleep sacks are great for older newborns and wintertime.

Reason being: when they are very new, we tended to change him every couple of hours all night longl. It was just more convenient for us to not have to zip down anything.

  • Totally depends on time of year IMO.  We have 5 I think fleece sleep sacks (like blanket sleepers but a closed bag at the end) and 3-4 gowns.  Our girls have never worn the gowns because they are T-shirt material and they were fall/winter babies.  This one will probably wear the lighter ones though.

    Perfect. Thanks!

  • Love sleep sacks, especially the ones that also allow you to bundle.  On the whole though, sleep sacks are warmer...they are more like wearable blankets.

  • I am pretty sure the sleep sack is to be used in lieu of blankets (because blankets can cause suffocation). A friend of mine put her daughter in her pj's, which are sometimes a gown or onesie and then into the sleep sack. I will probably do the same thing.

  • logan kicked right out of gowns - they never fit him right but he has been tall since birth. They annoyed me more than anything, so  im going with all sleep sacks this time around.

Even though this baby is due in June, im using them. Ill just get the regular material (not fleece) since the air conditioning will be on.

  • We used sleep sacks from the time we stopped using the swaddle me (maybe 4 months) until 1 year.  So this included winter, spring, and summer.  She also wore either a cotton or fleece footsie pajama.  IMO, gowns are like a pajama and wouldn't necessarily replace a sleep sack.

  • DD was born in Feb, and wore both at the same time for quite awhile.

  • Loved the sleep gowns!  Newborns go through so many diapers even at night that it was super nice to just lift up his little "dress" and swap dipes.  I wanted to get a sleep sack to go over the gown when it was really cold because it almost substitutes as a blanket and in our current day of "no blankets because of SIDs" it seems like a good fit.  Just never got around to it.
  • I've always used a sleepsack for safety reasons.  The Halo SleepSack in particular was designed specifically to protect babies from SIDS and being a first-time mom, SIDS was a big fear for me. Also, the gowns tend to be lighter, so in winter, it was nice to be able to use the fleece sleepsack and know that my baby was both safe and warm.  Gowns are easy for diaper changes, but sleepsacks work great too because of the inverted zipper.
