Devacurl questions

How long do the products last?  They are really expensive.  Trying to figure out if I could justify that kind of purchase.  My hair is curly and used to be beautiful.  But the texture changed during pregnancy and it's lost quite a bit of curl.  I have some hair that's still really curly, and a lot that is just frizzy and wavy.  And I checked and the closest salon that does the Devacurl method is 84 miles away. =(

The products didn't do that much for me (although the haircut at a Deva salon was really worth it, but not 84 miles worth it). I have better luck with the Tigi Bedhead or Curls Rock products.

The biggest part of the Deva philosophy is not using shampoo. If you follow this with any decent conditioner, you should see the difference.

I'm confused (as per usual).  You go to Seattle for cuts?

oh no. you still have to cleanse. conditioning is to moisturize but you need to cleanse too. they just don't lather. i honestly notice a big difference between the days that i use the no-poo & conditioner vs. just conditioner. it looks better w/both steps.

What do you use in lieu of shampoo?

lol. stl = st. louis. where i am from.

and i use their no-poo. it is a shampoo but w/o the harsh chemicals that create the lather. lather didn't used to be in shampoos. it was created during ww2 b/c society was into a bubbly clean thing. it is actually really bad for your hair. you can either buy no-poo, that is a shampoo that doesn't lather, or low-poo, that just has a little bit of lather. it takes a little while to get used to, but now i think lathering shampoo is weird!

Just conditioner. Although I cheat and shampoo about once a week. I just saw Carolinag's comment. The no-poo product didn't seem to do anything for me. I guess it all depends on what kind of curl you have. Have you been on naturallycurly.com? They rate a lot of shampoos, conditioners and you can compare the ratings based on what kind of curl you have.

Okay, St. Louis, MI or MO?  Hahaha, so many questions!

I've been googling (dangerous!) and apparently no-pooing can also be
"washing" your hair with conditioner rather than shampoo.  Any thoughts on this?

missouri. and i will say that in a pinch i will only use conditioner, but my hair looks so much better when i use the no-poo to cleanse. it is formulated to remove all of the grime and stuff, while moisturizing, whereas the conditioner seems to just lock all moisture in.

Sounds like I should become a retailer and deal only to you guys!  I may have to check and see if they will be in my area anytime to do classes I think it would be helpful.  I always do great curly cuts but would like to hear their philosophy since most people just cut and straighten curly hair and not even try to work with it.  I have curly hair and have only had one or two cuts I have loved.

you totally should. one of the biggest differences is that they cut your hair dry. just fyi. on www.devaconcepts.com they have info on getting trained. i have considered going to beauty school JUST so i could become a curl care specialist!

I'm super late here but I wanted to throw in my $.2

I just got my hair cut by someone trained through the whole devacurl method. It has made a HUGE difference! You might be able to find someone trained to cut curly hair that doesn't really advertise that they know this method. I had my hair cut in a teeny little place that was in the back section of a beauty supply store and I only found out about it through a friend of a friend. I agree I wouldn't go 84 miles to get a cut but I do like the products a lot. My hair was just like yours...used to be nice, actually went completely straight during pregnancy, and then sort of curly but mostly frizzy and wavy. She really fixed things and as soon as she started cutting she said she could see the curls coming back.
