I've heard of people just topping a table with those big Lego base squares (I think they're often green). Then you could use whatever table you thought would hold up.

It doesn't scream "holiday" to get something secondhand, I guess, but we got it for DS's 3rd bday and he didn't notice. He doesn't play with it that much, but when he does, he enjoys it.

This is exactly what we did. We just bought the big base plates (which are not cheap, but I think I found a deal for 6 for $73 online at a teachers' store) and screwed them to the top of a short wooden table we weren't using. It works like a charm and, IMO, looks a million times nicer than the official Lego tables.
