and anyone else think these women are totally nutso???   the article talks about totally unassisted home births-like only you and hubby there or maybe not even hubby but just you.   one woman didn't have prenatal care either.   i know it has been done for years/centuries/since beginning of time and birth is a natural process, but seriously if you have access to modern medicine and safety measures why not use them in some capacity???   there are probably 3rd world women who would change places with any of us for medical care in a heartbeat!   anyway, saw it and had to share.

  • I'm all for home births, but this is crazy.

  • Yep, I saw it and couldn't believe it.  Do these same women forego medical intervention to set a broken bone or have surgery w/o anesthesia?

Birth may be natural and women may have been doing it for centuries unassisted, but they were also dying during birth at alarming rates.  There are lots of things that can go wrong and women do lose their babies and/or their own lives during birth.  Unfortunately, even the birth stories on here demonstrate the risks -- cord wrapped around the baby's neck, hemorraging, etc.

So, while it's their choice, I think it's reckless to gamble with your health and your baby's health that way.

  • Not only is it nuts but seriously dangerous for both mom and baby! I saw one who had surprise twins, in an unassisted home birth where she was home alone, and had not one but TWO Breech babies in the tub! She never had any prenatal care either (this wasn't her first child or unassisted home birth). I think it's just dangerous, I mean what if baby isn't breathing and needs to be intubated? Or mom bleeds out?

  • A friend and I talked about this. She actually knew a few people who had horrible experiences. Situations where the baby died due to lack of medical intervention, and others where the mother's life was lost.

I just wouldn't take those risks.

Ditto.  We are planning a home birth but this is nuts.  My midwife would transfer me in a heartbeat if she suspected anything, but DH and I would never know the difference on our own.  Unattended seems irresponsible enough, but without prenatal care as well really takes the cake.

  • Although homebirth is not for me, I have no problem with people choosing midwife assisted homebirth.

This? Is nuts. My chiro was telling me about a patient he had that came in for an adjustment and delivered her baby 30 minutes after getting home...alone...totally planned. Then had her 11 year old daughter call 911 once she had cut the umbilical cord. THAT I have a major problem with.
