2nd Trimester

Second time moms

How long did you keep baby in the room with you? Was it the whole first year or just 3 months. I don't know if I should put baby's crib in my room or buy a bassinet. My master bedroom is on the opposite side of the house from the baby's room. I know there are monitors. I just don't know. I'm thankful for any advice or ideas.

Re: Second time moms

  • Only until she was born.  Stick out tongue  We put the girls in their crib from day 1.  We've never had room for anything other than our furniture and bed in our room though.

  • from the second day we were home from the hospital . . DD slept in her room . . she was such a terrible sleeper that it was just better that we kept her in her room . .
  • lol. Did you breastfeed? If you did was it a pain in the butt to get up and go to there room to feed them and then go back to yours?
  • Wait... They're supposed to leave your room?!? D@mn... mine are still in there... :D
  • We co-sleep :) Gavin is 2 years old and still comes in our room(he starts off in his own bed now but comes in around 3am somenights not all) He coslept with me for the first four months then we moved him to his crib in his own room. When we changed him to a big boy bed he was fine but would have nights when he wanted to cuddle with us. When I started showing and he felt the baby move he has been extra clingy and has wanted to cuddle and snuggle a lot. I don't mind it at all, he needs security and Im not going to deny it. There will come an age when we will change that, but he's still my baby and he's welcome in our bed whenever he wants to come in.
  • I kept both of mine in our room for a little while.  A few months I think.  I would have never made it a whole year.  There's a point when they become very aware of where you are and where they are.  I tried to get them sleeping in their own rooms before that point because I didn't want issues like tantrums or separation anxiety (although that happened anyway).

I think it's something you'll have to just feel your way through.  When you're tired of having them in your room, move them.  Or when you feel it's best for them, move them.  There's no manual.  The only structure is what you create.  Good luck. Smile

I BF both girls.  W/ DD1 we had a bed in her room that I laid on while I nursed her.  With DD2, I dozed in the glider while she ate.  I didn't have issues except getting up all night in the winter made me dress warmer for bed!

  • It lasted about 2 nights in the pack n play.  DS was and is a very loud sleeper.  We didn't sleep at all with him in the room.  His room is close enough that it wasn't a big deal.
  • My advice is to plan on keeping the baby in your room for as long as you feel comfortable.  For me, that was 2 weeks.  I just wasn't getting any sleep because I was responding to the baby's every sigh.  You will be surprised at how much they are NOT quiet sleepers even so tiny.  So we moved the baby to his room (with monitor) and I think we all slept better.

  • I breastfed so it was a heck of a lot easier keeping DD in our room in a pack 'n play bassinet for the first 6 months since her room is on the other side of the house.  I might have moved her a few months sooner but DH is in the military and was away until then.  I also felt better since she was so small and didn't sleep well at all for the first 6 months.

We will most likely do the same this time around though especially since DD will be using the crib as a toddler bed for a little while until we get her a real bed.

  • at the very beginning yes, but then we had lots of issues and stopped. . however, bottle or BF .  i would still need to go back and forth every couple of hours. .
  • DS slept in our room until he was 7 months old. He slept in a bassinet until he was about 4 months old. From 4 to 7 months he slept in our bed, which I never thought I would do, but it just happened that way.

Like PP said, you never know what will work best for you. I'd say get the bassinet, and set the crib up in the baby's room. That way if it's not working for you to have the baby in your room, you don't have to worry about lugging or disassembling the crib to move it back to baby's room.

  • Jack never slept in our room.  We used a monitor.

  • DS was in our room for the first 3 months, we moved him into his own room shortly before I went back to work. The 3 months was perfect since I was BF by the time we reached 3 months he was sleeping through the night.
  • I would set the crib up in the nursery, personally. It's a PITA to take those things apart and some of them don't fit through doors (our convertible won't).

We had a pack & play in our room, but we started transitioning her to her crib for naps at two weeks and for nights not long after. She was in her crib 99% of the time by two months.

You'll also be able to use a pack & play much longer than you would be able to use a bassinet.

  • DS was in a bassinet in our room for 2 months.  I made sure that he took naps in his crib to help with the transition.  He also enjoyed playing in his crib as well.  When he was about 10 weeks old, we moved him over to his room.

It was a very easy transition for him.  For me... not so much.  I LOVED having him right next to me, so I highly recommend a bassinet.  And make sure you have a video monitor and the Angelcare Sensor monitor.  I would have got zero sleep if it weren't for those monitors.

  • We kept her in w/us for 3 months/when she outgrew the bassinet.  I'll admit even w/the monitor I didn't sleep much for the first month she was in her crib cuz I kept getting up to check on her.

Cathryn went in her room the first night.  I didnt spend the money or time making her a nursery to stare at her all night.  That is her room.  Remember babies make tons of noise and it may keep you up.  That is what worked out for us.

Ditto.  DS was in his crib in his own room from day 1.  I did BF, but his room was right across the hall from our room and I honestly didn't think it was that big of a deal to walk a couple feet to his room.  I just made sure I had a comfy glider and ottoman in his room!!

  • DD slept in our room for 4 months. I BF and it was too much to get up and go into her room for night feedings. At 4 months we realized she was sleeping like a dream and we were not bc she was such a noisy sleeper. She weaned to her room pretty well then.
  • 0-4 months bassinet, I was too scared to bed share because of his size. Then for a while he would fall asleep in his crib and when he woke up in the middle of the night we would bring him into our bed. Now he is in our bed full time and we are all very happy. It really depends on you and your husband and your baby. I personally sleep better when he is next to me and love cuddling with him in the middle of the night and love watching him smile in his sleep.

  • 11 months :) It was hard transitioning her, but worth it to get our own room back. I loved having her near me, though!

  • He slept in a bassinet in our room until 5 months when he outgrew it..this one will probably stay about the same in our room
