2nd Trimester

Shingles

I am a little freaked out... this morning I go on facebook, and my aunt's status says that she has shingles.

I just saw her at Thanksgiving, so I don't know if she had them at that time and the symptoms just hadn't appeared yet.  But that's not mostly why I'm nervous...

This morning (as in ANY minute now) her boyfriend is going to be dropping off their glider and ottoman for us to have.  We planned this last night over the phone, before I knew about her having shingles.  Now he's on his way already I'm sure, because they live about 45 min. away.  She is not coming, but I am still a little freaked to think that maybe he could be a carrier of shingles now because of her?  I'm trying to look up stuff about shingles online because I know nothing about them.

Grrr!

Re: Shingles

  • If he doesn't have sores, he isn't contangious from what I understand.

  • Technically, if you've had chickenpox in your life then you also are a "carrier" for shingles.

Don't fret. The only way you can contract shingles from your aunt is if you skin-to-skin rub against one of her seeping wounds. (um, yuck)

  • My brother had shingles over thanksgiving and wasn't able to come thanksgiving at our house b/c of it.  His wife wasn't contagious.  Its just important that you stay away from her until the sores scab over.

  • My DH had shingles recently, it is a horrible pain along with the rash.  I wouldn't wish it on anyone.  I was also PG at the time he had it.  The Dr. said we were fine since I have had chicken pox.

Anyone who has ever had chicken pox in their life carries the dormant virus in their body.  Shingles can occur anytime.  If you have had chicken pox you will not contract Shingles from another person. If you have not had chicken pox and you come in direct contact with the rash portion of the shingles of another person you will contract chicken pox, not shingles.  Shingles is not an airborne disease.

I hope she feel better soon, its a horrible thing to have to go through.

  • My Mom had shingles a couple weeks before thanksgiving.  I called my OB to see if it would be safe to see her on Thanksgiving.  He said that at my first appointment he did a test for chickenpox antibodies so that when this question comes up he's prepared.  (Probably more for someone who has had contact with someone with Shingles and is freaking out.)  My test showed the antibodies so he said I could be around her oozing sores if I wanted too.  (Ewww...no thanks!)
