LO is 9 days old tomorrow....his circumcision is looking way better (less red and swollen).....at what point can you quit with the vaseline and gauze at every diaper change? Finding that gauze is hard! Wal Mart only has the sterile gauze designed for wounds - its expensive and only has 25 per pack. I'll be glad when we can quit

Re: How long do you have to use gauze/vaseline on circ?
I stopped using gauze when we ran out of what the hospital gave us.
Then I just put vaseline on it without the gauze because it looked just fine but he hadn't had his 2 week appointment yet.
After the check up they said we didn't have to do anything anymore.
Ok, not to get gross here, but our hospital told us that we didn't even need to use the vaseline when we left. Gauze was a 2-day thing. We were told NOT to retract the foreskin, either. My nurse practitioner (in peds) aunt visited this past weekend and told me DS's circ looked dry and to put vaseline on it. She retracted the foreskin and about freaked me out because the hospital said not to. I figured she knew what she was doing, however, so I didn't say anything.
Holy freaking crap, I am beyond pissed right now. I took DS to the pediatrician for the first time today, and the foreskin had REATTACHED ITSELF. They had to pull back on it (pediatrician said it was the worst one she'd ever seen) and basically recreate the circ. DS screamed. I felt so bad for him. The pediatrician told me to KEEP VASELINE ON UNTIL HEALED and to retract the foreskin starting at 5 days old. Had we done that, this wouldn't have happened.
I wish hospitals and peds would get on the same page with this. Obviously given this post, there's a lot of conflicting information out there. I'd hate for anyone else's DS to have to experience what mine did today (or their mother's for that matter). YUCK!
