I had a really fast labor, so the antibiotics weren't really given in time. We had to stay in the hospital an extra day for monitoring. DD did not receive anything extra. I was in an area where a baby had recently died from Group B Strep, so they were really concerned about it.
In most cases, nothing. But 1 in 200 babies will get sick - and if they show symptoms of infection at birth, they will be given antibiotics.
Actually, if you are GBS+ and you don't get your antibiotics completed before delivery (I accidentally got to the hospital just 45 min. before my baby delivered so I know from whence I speak), they can do a blood test on the baby to see if the baby was exposed. So, they don't even have to wait to see if the baby shows symptoms to treat with the antibiotics.
The chances of it being passed on is very small, but if it does happen, the baby can become very sick and possibly die, if it isn't treated immediately/properly, at least that is what I was told.
I was given two doses of the antibiotic, because DD did not want to come into this world very quickly. I labored for amost 12 hours with her before she was born.
My friend had her DD last night. Her water broke in the car, she barely made it to the hospital, delivered in the ER and they never had a chance to hook her up to the IV. She left the house @ 8:45p and delivered at 9:48p! Five pushes and the baby was out. I hope that means there was little or no time for the baby to be exposed and infected.
