Installing gates with a banister

So we have several gates that will need to be installed that will have to attach to banisters, not all with flat surfaces.  Has anyone had any experience with this?  One side is flat and I can see how you would screw something in, but I don't see how you would do that on the round surface on the other side.  I found this online, but don't know how it will work.

Re: Installing gates with a banister

  • I don't know how but DH did it, so I know it can be done. We put the side that opens on the banister side.
  • Loading the player...
  • We screwed it into one of the spindles, not the bottom of the banister. Our spindles have flat sides.

This is the kind of gate we have....

  • I had a similar issue. I actually took another piece of wood and connected it to the banister so that I wouldn't have to drill into the banister at all.

I first screwed metal brackets to the new piece of wood so that I could set it next to the banister and the banister would stabilize it. Then I took thick nylon straps and strapped the new piece of wood to the banister and staple gunned the straps into the wood. Then I found some fabric and covered the nylon straps so it looked nice. I have some pictures at home that I can PIP tonight. It was quite a big project but I'm happy with the result.

    Edit: Here are the pics.

You are so handy! When can you come over to my house and do the same thing here????

  • We used this product to mount our gate to a pole at the top of our stairs:  https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2967825

It comes with a board that you screw the hardware into, which is secured to the pole with bracket-like things.  Works great.  We bought a different one at first that had velcro strips instead of the brackets -- that one was a piece of junk.

For the bottom of the stairs, we have a Kidco pressure-mounted gate, and separate Y-attachments for the spindles.  https://www.kidco.com/main.taf?erube_fh=kidco&kidco.submit.gateDetails=1&kidco.modelNumber=GY&kidco.bc=gc

  • If you have spindles, KidCo makes a spindle kit.  We used it in a couple of places (one on an angled wall, the other on a spindle).  At the top of our steps, we also used a piece of wood for the banister.
