Postpartum Depression

OK, I'll share

i have had borderline anxiety since I was a teen. I tried different (non-medication related) activities to alleviate it, but as my pregnancy progressed, it got worse.

When my son was born, it seemed like the hormonal roller coaster was over almost immediately. I was elated that my little boy was finally here, and from the looks of it, he was perfect! 

Fast forward a few weeks, and our little man started to cry. And he wouldn't stop. It didn't matter what i did, he would scream. I felt like such a failure as a mother. It got to the point where I sat in bed one day, and just didn't want to take care of him anymore. I let him cry for 30 minutes and didn't try to console him.

I knew something was terribly wrong. Mothers should want to care for their children, even if they were difficult from time to time. I had a long talk with DH, and I told him I just didn't connect with our son. I didn't feel human, and I just wanted him to STOP CRYING!

My DH agreed that I needed more help, and he decided that the first thing we needed to do was get me out of the house. So, he called up one of my girlfriends, and send me to lunch with her. He took care of ds all day. It made such a difference, and I noticed that I started to miss my little boy. I missed taking care of him.

After a few days, I started to feel much better. The crying didn't get better, but I did. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, my DH makes me put the baby down and have some "me" time.

He also shattered the ridiculous notion that I had to do everything for myself, and that I should never get tired or overwhelmed. I needed help, and just admitting it made a world of difference for me.

  • Sounds like you have a great dh! My dh was very supportive of my experience as well - which I think made a world of difference.

    And your ds is ADORABLE!!!
