Have you ever rented a steam cleaner?

I want to steam clean my rugs before we have guests in for Christmas.  In the past we've had a service come and pick up the rugs, take them and clean them and drop them back off.  But at around 300-400$ per rug I'm thinking NO!  We have about 3 or 4 8x10 rugs that I want to clean!

Have you considered buying one? They're not that pricey and work pretty well. Ours broke, so we just borrow my parents (who have a nicer one than we did anyway). We had it for years, though.

Ugh. this is why we have no rugs!!!

We have a steam cleaner and it would be a PIA to try and clean the rugs unless they were weighted down.

I was told that renting them for nice area rugs (not just standard carpet) could damage them. We had a local place like stanley steemer come out and do them. It was cheaper than sending them out. They have a special tool that they use for area rugs so it doesn't slide all over the place .

Good idea on buying one since I have a dog that's mostly an inside dog....oh, and a 3 yr. old that sometimes pees on the rugs!  Gah!  It might pay off to just own one to use from time to time!
