Purell

Do you ask people to purell or wash their hands before holding LO?  And if you did when they were little, around what age did you stop?

We have still been doing it.  She is always sucking her hands so I hate it when people touch her without washing or purelling first since for some reason her hands is the first thing people like to touch and hold.

Friends and family understand and are good about it, especially since it is cold and flu season.  Would it be completely weird if I asked Santa to do it (I have a bottle in my diaper bag) or would you just wash her hands after ans hope for the best?

Re: Purell

  • I think most Santas wear gloves (??)...but if not, yeah I think it would be totally weird and he may not do it. But it's one of those things you should do if you feel really strongly about it - and not think twice. I would wash her up after anyway - since there will have been a thousand kids on that lap.

We're big on washing before touching the baby. I just make a joke out of it and call ourselves germaphobes and people just go with it. Evan is a thumbsucker so I know how you feel. When we go to wegmans now, he is in his own stroller and not in the cart because I am so paranoid.

Ahh yes I didn't even think about that haha

  • when DS was little everyone washed their hands, but now I don't really worry about it. I am totally not a "germaphobe" though. I mean, yes, I wash my hands after I go to the bathroom, changing his diaper and always before I nurse him. I figure there are so many germs out there, I can't prevent him from coming into contact with them.... so many of them are airborne anyway. And (knock on wood) he hasn't had even a cold yet!
  • We asked people to do that when he was little...I'm guessing we stopped around the time he went to day care at 4 months.  Most people still did anyway, but if not, I just washed him up afterwards.  I'd probably just wash his hands after Santa.  But like PP, I'm not a germaphobe at all.
  • I just saw a show on TV that was showing Santa's with Purrell and they were saying that they are being extra strict this year and making sure they either sanitize there hands between kids and even change their gloves, not to mention making sure there suits are cleaned very often.  I wouldn't ask Santa to Purell his hands, but I would wash up LO after seeing Santa.
