Swelling...

For some reason, I am getting swelling only in one leg? It happens to be the leg that has, of course, developed varicose veins and I have to wear a support stocking on.  The swelling gets so bad sometimes that I swear it is double the size of the other leg and foot and it itches me to death....I am trying to stay off my feet as much as possible, but even that does not keep it from swelling all the time...any suggestions?

Re: Swelling...

  • Yeah how much I'm on my feet never correlates to the amount of swelling I have.  I'm a wedding photographer and after an 9 hour wedding I expected them to be the size of giant potatoes and nothing... yet some mornings I'll wake up and they are huge.  Weird... they feel so puffy and full and I can barely flex my feet, let alone wear any shoes haha.  Flip flops are my only option... good thing I live in Florida.
  • I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon so I will let him know then...I thought it was a little odd, but then since I can't see my feet anymore, it is rare that I know what they look like, I just happened to notice it over the last few days because I was at home for the holidays and wearing slippers instead of steel toes, so I could actually see my feet when I put them up. We will see what he says tomorrow.

  • tell your doctor about the swelling, s/he may want to make sure you don't have a clot in that leg.
  • I work in a plant, so unfortunately flip flops are not an option, it is steel toes every day, but on my days off I go for the birks and much to my husband's amusement, toe socks so my feet don't get cold - he hates them, but they mean that I can wear my birks during the winter - this is SC, so winter is a relative term, but it has been down in the low 40s a few times already this year.

Exactly.  My doctor was really concerned about the swelling in one of my ankles, until I explained that I had twisted it about 5 times in the last 5 years so it tends to swell.  But when she mentioned Deep Vein Thrombosis, I got a little scared.

  • My OB sent me to have an u/s done of my left leg because the swelling was so much worse in my left leg than my right. She wanted to make sure I didn't have any blood clots in my leg. With the vericose veins already being an issue I would definitely mention it to your doctor. Maybe even bring up the blood clot concern.
