Ok so my doctor checked my platelette (excuse my spelling) count weeks ago (due to my anemia history) and put me on an iron supplement twice daily along with my prenatals. Last week he checked me again and I'm still to low so I'm now on Corvite 150 twice daily and my count is 9.6 he says he likes to see a 10 and above. I'm having a csection and he said worse case scenario I may need blood ahhh. Anyone go through this and didn't need a transfusion? not that I mind having one its just im scared. Also has anyone vomitted from these pills? I checked the side effects and its not listed but my stomach is upside down ugh...TIA
Re: Low platelette count
I've had issues with anemia with this pg. I've gone done to 8.3 and I think I'm up to 9 something now. My OB gave me Corvite samples to try and they made me feel sick and I felt like I burped up an aweful taste of 'iron' all day long. I would ask to see if there is a different type of iron that they can offer you. Right now I'm just taking OTC ferrous sulfate and haven't had any issues with it bothering my stomach. Gl!!
Are you sure it's not your hemoglobin that is low? The values you gave and that your doctor recommended were compatible with HgB levels. Normal platelet values are 150,000-400,000. Low platelet's will affect your bloods ability to clot. You would be given platelet transfusions (not blood) if they were critically low and if not that you would be given corticosteroids or IVIG (IV immnuoglobulins) to try and raise your levels.
I'm just saying because they are both important but I would ask your Doctor to clarify which one is low (platelets or Hemoglobin).
Low Hgb will cause you to feel tired, you may look pale, your heart will race more easily (due to trying to deliver extra oxygen to your organs) and your tongue may look swollen. Low platelets on the other hand you may bruise more easily and bleed more for simple cuts but in general won't feel too differently.
I hope this helps!
