circumcision question

Well, DS had his circumcision done today.  The pedi didn't want to do it at birth, said he was too small down there.  It was very rough on both of us.    The doctor said he will sleep a lot today, keep an eye on the site for excessive bleeding, put vaseline on it to keep from sticking, and clean around it carefully when diapering him.  What she didn't mention was how HE was going to feel afterwards, other than the sleeping.  I got him calmed down and he is asleep, but I worry about his pain and discomfort and how long it will bother him.  She told me he can have childrens tylenol if absolutely necessary. She also mentioned the gauze smelling bad, that it was common.  Is there anything anyone can offer me on what to expect over the healing process? How long did it take? Any other moms who had their DS circ delayed?

TIA! I appreciate any insight!

Re: circumcision question

  • I had ds' circ delayed until he was just under two months old.  I think it took eight days for the plastibell to fall off but it doesn't sound like that's the method your pedi uses so it might be a little bit different.

She did it in-office with just gauze around it and wants gauze on it if needed to protect it.  No plastibell.  Did your LO go back to normal somewhat after the first day?

  • We had to see a ped urologist for DS and will not have him circumcised until he's 6 months old under general anesthesia. As an aside, he has some penoscrotal webbing that makes it a bit more difficult of a procedure apparently. He looks normal to me, but I guess the docs know what they're talking about. Anyway, I am very worried about pain and discomfort come April and am interested to hear anyone's responses. I've been meaning to post something on 6-12.

Hope your LO isn't too uncomfortable and heals soon.

  • DS was uncomfortable for about a day (we had it done in the hospital).  After that, I just kept it slathered in vaseline and it healed completely in about a week.

  • My LO had it done at 9 days old and the plastic bell was the method used.  He slept most of the first day and was back to normal after that.  Within a week it was completely healed and the plastic ring fell off.
