dependence on paci

LO has started waking up when the paci falls out of his mouth, so last night i was up every hour on the hour just about, only to replace the paci & go back to bed.

i've obviously created the monster, giving it to him all the time, but now is there a way to make him not quite so dependent?  he used to fall asleep & if it fell out, it fell out.

Re: dependence on paci

  • I found that if DD is sound asleep and it falls out she doesn't care, but when she isn't quite in that deep sleep, she will wake up for it. I read that it takes newborns about 15 minutes to reach a deep sleep and last night after feedings rocked her to sleep for at least 15 minutes so she was sound asleep when I put her back in the crib. She didn't wake up at all until the next feeding.

  • ds grew dependent on the paci in the NICU because they gave it to him ALL THE TIME. i give it to him at night to fall asleep. once he is in a deep sleep i gently move my hand away and let it fall out and he sleeps without it. also i wont give it to him unless he screams for it and nothing else will fix the problem. i found that i was giving the paci to him when he didnt really need it and now he uses it less and less everyday
  • I had the same problem.  We used white noise and only have to give it to him once!

This. I didn't want to deal with that problem. If anything at night I let her use me as a pacifier which she never seems to want that long (5-10 minutes) and then is ready to go back to sleep.
