Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Tummy Time - 3 months

My 3 month old has never enjoyed tummy time.  He is very strong as in pulling himself up and holding himself sturdy, but I wonder if he will ever hold himself up on his hands while on his tummy! He's not even close. He just grunts and eventually starts screaming until we pick him up.  Has anyone experienced this?

Re: Tummy Time - 3 months

  • My DD is over four months. Although she now enjoys tummy time and is very strong, she also does not hold herself up with her hands.  I think I saw a picture in one of my baby books in the five month section...not 100% sure that it was a milestone for that month, though.

  • ds hates tummy time. he dosnt mind for the first couple of minutes but it always ends in screaming and crying. hes "2 months" technically but actually almost 6 (he came a little early) but i found that if i hold him on my shoulder he pushes himself up with his hands and looks around.
  • I was just talking to my DH about this last night.  My DS will be 3 months old next week, and he too is no where near pushing himself up.  I try to do tummy time, but most of the time he has a meltdown after 3-4 minutes.  I guess every little bit helps though.
  • My ds also does not enjoy tummy time too much.  He only lasts a few minutes before crying.  Not to mention that he spits up a lot so I have to be careful about not doing it right after a feeding and even then it's still pretty risky, lol.  I'm afraid he will spit up all over the place when on his tummy.

I do hold him upright in my lap a lot though so that he can work his neck muscles.  As far as working the arms... I've sort of been at a loss.  Although I do hold him on my shoulder as pp said so that he can push off my shoulders... I'm not sure that he has though, lol.

  • Thank you! I don't get worried much but a co-worker started talking about her 4 month old and how much he can hold himself up and I freaked!!  Don't go to youtube either!  There are super babies on their bellies!
