Anyone have a baby with IUGR?

I just found out that our baby is measuring 5 lbs. 13 oz. at our growth u/s today. They told us this means he is measuring in the 10th % and they are discussing inducing me this week. Everything else on the u/s looked normal (blood flow, fluid levels, etc.) but they said that technically this is IUGR. I just googled and of course freaked myself out. Anyone else have any experience with this?

  • my dr never called it IGUR, but i was induced at 39 weeks 3 days because she was measuring small. at our growth u/s at 38 weeks, 5 days they estimated DD to be 5 lbs 8 oz. She was 5 lbs 10 oz at birth and perfectly healthy and proportionate!

  • yep my little guy was diagnosed at 34 weeks and I was induced at 36w 6d because of it. All of his measurements were on track except his abdominal measurement which was in the 3%

Dont let google freak you out too bad, I did and it was not helpful. I delivered 3 weeks early and he was 5# 3oz. Perfectly healthy, went right home with us, has eaten fine since and he's now 3 weeks old and about 6 1/2 lbs. We only had issues with keeping his temperature up which was no biggie, and we just have to be vigilent about waking to feed him. We have fed him the same in the hospital as today- every 3 hrs during the day and 4 hours at night. I also had no problem with them supplementing formula from the get go because his weight was the main concern and we continued formula feeding and pumping for the first 2 weeks straight until we attempted to breastfeed again. The breastfeeding would've been fine if my supply wasn't crappy so most likely you'll be fine in that aspect too, we just had to use a nipple shield to get him to latch properly after the bottle use.

Oh yea and at my ultrasounds the week prior he was measuring around 4 1/2 lbs, 2 days prior to the induction they showed him at 5#2oz and he was born at 5#3.

  • i had it - baby was born at term (39 wks) but coined "SGA" or small for gestational age and had to be admitted to the NICU at birth b/c of his weight didn't support the labor & had breathing / blood pressure issues.

i wasn't diagnosed though while preg - just after the fact.

don't let hte information freak you out too much - there isn't enough research on IUGR so not much anyone can do to avoid it for now.

your baby will catch up in a year or so - that's what the neonatologist & his ped told us.

i've had 2 gfs w/ the same issue and their babies have all caught up - just think the 1st year is hard.

     best of luck!
