Starting a bad habit?

My LO will be one month on friday and currently during the day I try to do a sort of routine of eat, activity, and then nap.  When its time to go sleep after an activity I either hold him and put him to sleep or put him in the vibrating chair.  Sometimes I move him to the bassinet sometimes I just hold him or leave him in the chair while he sleeps.  At night we have him in the bassinett since he wakes every 2 hours after a 3-4 hour stretch.  But I don't want to start bad habits of rocking him to sleep or using the vibration to go to sleep.  I would love to be able to just put him in the bassinet and let him fall asleep, but is it still too early for this?  I want to enjoy my time with him while he is young and don't want to rush the scheduling but don't want to start bad habits.  Then I was wondering when did everyone transition from bassinet to crib?

Re: Starting a bad habit?

  • He is too little to "spoil" his sleep habits! Hold him as long as he will let you. My DS1 is 19 months old, and we rocked/held him as long as he would let us! He is just fine. Our babysitters often comment on how easily he goes down at night. Just a hug and a kiss, and his nightlight!

I wish DS 1 would let me rock him now!

  • I know it's hard to believe, but there are no bad habits at this age. Around 3-4 months, when they are able to understand more, I would then begin to put my LO in her crib sleepy but awake (and not rock her to sleep), and if she cries, I'll try to comfort her. But it's not till theyre a little older (at least 3-4 months, or even older!) that there are "bad habits".

    Just enjoy your LO.

  • I rock & nurse my girl to sleep every night. Do what you need to do to get her to sleep! Dont worry about bad habits yet.
  • My baby bedshares at night.  During the day he sleeps in the swing.  I try to get him used to his crib by just letting him play in there at least once a day.  He will only sleep in there for about 15 minutes.  I think that your baby is too little for bad habits though.  I know I didnt really answer your question, just thought I would put my .02 in.
  • We rock and nurse/feed until he is drowsy and then we swaddle and place in the crib.  He usually opens his eyes and looks around the crib then goes right to sleep.  We started this when he was in his bassinet in our room, and continued it when we moved him into his nursery (about 4 weeks).  It seems to work great so far.  The few times that he was fully asleep and we placed him in the crib he woke up screaming 10 minutes later.  I *think* it helps him to fall asleep in the same place he wakes up in.
