Anyone else with a Bicornuate or "heart-shaped" uterus?

So last Monday I had my first appt.  They did an u/s to date the pg and found that I have a bicornuate, or "heart-shaped," uterus.  At the appt., the doc who explained this all to me was not the doc I'm going to be seeing the rest of my pg.  I don't think he knew much about this.  All he said was that the baby is currently in a good location and that I'll have to come in more frequently and they'll do an u/s at every appt.  This all took me by surprise so I didn't really have any questions at the time, besides, the doc said there is nothing to worry about.

Well, over the weekend I found a really great site that explain everything about bicornuate and other uterus deformities.  I found that there are several things I need to prepare myself for.  The doc I talked to didn't tell me that this makes me a high-risk pg!!  After doing all this research I know more about what to expect, such as having a 50% chance of NEEDING a c-section due to the baby being in a breech position, or having to deliver very early.  All this is making me a little overwhelmed and I was wondering if any of you ladies have the same "heart-shaped" uterus.  Any information you ladies have would be GREATLY appreciated!! TIA!!

  • I have a bicornuate uterus.  My understanding is that it all depends on how separated the two horns are as to how high risk you will be.  I've had about 2-3 different doctors tell me that they are most concerned in the second and third trimesters so that could be why they didn't tell you too much about it now.  The ultrasound tech told me that there are many women who carry their babies to full term.  So, until you know more about how separated the two horns are, you don't know how "high risk" you are.  Write a list of all your questions and bring them to your next appointment.

  • Thanks!   From the picture the doc drew, the two horns were pretty separated, I don't know how accurate his drawing was though.  I have another appt. next week with the doc I'll see for the rest of my pg, I'll be able to ask her more about how extreme it is.

  • My husband's mom had one (she is deceased) and had to have a c-section on all three of her children.  My husband was 5lbs. 5oz., so I am assuming he came a little early, but he doesn't know for sure.

  • I was told I have a heart-shaped ute. Baby is fine so far and I think we are going to go over the risks more on Friday when I have my NT scan.

  • A good of mine has one and had a healthy baby boy in May. She was on bed rest for a couple of months, and the baby was early, but it all turned out fine.  Good luck!

Let me know how it goes!  I have another appt. next Tues.  I'll be able to talk about risks then.

I'll keep ya updated Wink . The Dr. and u/s tech didn't seem too alarmed about it, but I'll let you know what I find out!

  • It seems to me, it just depends on how severe yours is.  I was pregnant in early 2007, and lost the baby at seventeen weeks due to a septate uterus.  Mine was really bad though, and the baby just ran out of room.  I had surgery to repair it, and have since had a baby.  They originally thought that mine was bicornuate, but after an mri and hsg, they found it had a septum and was not actually heart shaped.  Hope that helps.

  • I also have a heart shaped uterus.  The Dr. discovered it way before I got pg and said I might have problems conceiving.  Guess he was wrong!!!  So far I have had no issues with it.  He did say that there was a slightly greater chance of having a breech baby since the baby often has their head in one side of the "heart" and then when it grows it doesn't have room to move.  Don't worry about it!!  That is the worst thing you can do.

  • Had an ultrasound yesterday and the LO is in the right side of my uterus.  Moving around like a champ though!!  I don't think it is considered high risk unless you have a really deep septum, in which case it is not bicornuate, but septate.
