Babies on the Brain

Hypothetical Question

How big of a pay cut would you take to cut your commute to 5 minutes. And guarantee all school district holidays off?

I have eyed my dream job and am just curious what y'all think. Of course assuming that you could make ends meet with the lower pay.

ETA: I'm heading into a meeting, but I'll be back in a bit.

Re: Hypothetical Question

  • If I could make ends meet and not have to work with junkies (hypothetically) I would take enough of a cut not to be struggling and not to be check to check.

  • I'd take at least a 20% pay cut.  My commute is nearly an hour and it sucks.

ETA, we are currently saving all of my salary and living on DH's.  Obviously if things were different my answer would change.

  • What is your commute now? And does that include summers off?

It would still be in the junkie field, but on the front end. Jr. High and High School Drug Prevention and Early Intervention.

  • School district schedule would cut down on a lot of child care costs...

  • Well I'd hate to add an extra 2 minutes to my commute... ( I live 1.5 miles from my office) but if it meant my dream job and more holidays I'm with Jess.

On average my commute is 45 minutes. But on a bad day it can easily be an hour. I'm not sure about the summers.

  • I took a 35k Pay cut to work in a dream job in a school district instead of a hosptial.  The hours and benefits are better.  I sitll work at the hospital on the weekends and vacations  which makes up for 10-12k a year.

My commute is ever longer, BUT... quality of life is SOO much better.

Dream job/better quality of life.  MUCH better.  Espeically since you have a LO on their way.

  • I'd take as much of a paycut as you can comfortably afford in that situation. If you can swing it, I say go for it!
  • I would figure out the gas plus what my time is worth for the commute for current job. Then deduct that from the pay to see how close they are. I would also figure in what it is worth to me (assuming you can afford the cut anyway or you wouldn't be considering it) to be close to home/day cares etc. with baby on the way, what the pay difference would be should you get summer's off/divided by the savings in day care through the summer months should you have the time. and see where you are at.

It may not be a question of money at all once you balance the monetary pro's and con's which would make me feel my decision is more justified no matter what decision I make.
