Have you read the Sookie Stackhouse books?  They are so addicting.  Vampire related though.  Not sure if that is a turn off for you...

I like Jennifer Weiner?s writing. She did Good in Bed, In Her Shoes, etc. She has a cynical, dry, self-deprecating sense of humor.

I second this. Jen's newest book is "Best Friends Forever."  It was a fun read.
