caffeine & bf

I don't usually drink caffeine but I'm pretty sure they screwed up at Dunkin' Donuts today.  I've been feeling jumpy and gross since this afternoon.  DS is acting out of sorts too and is having trouble getting to sleep tonight.  Is it possible the caffeine is messing with him too?  I know a lot of girls who drink regular coffee and bf, so what's the deal?  Any thoughts?

Re: caffeine & bf

  • I would say it's a possibility, though decaf still has a small amount of caffeine in it, so if you've gone without for your entire pgcy and up until now, it might affect you more than it would have otherwise. I try to limit anything that might have caffeine in it (even chocolate) to before noon- that way, if it keeps LO up, at least it's not during the middle of the night.

  • Nurses told me at the hospital to have no more then 2 caffeinated drinks a day. I usually have one in the morning and one in the afternoon. I avoid any caffeine after 4pm, so it won't effect DDs night time sleep. But if you never have caffeine, then your LO wouldn't be used to it and I would guess it would be more likely to affect them then mine who is used to it.

  • It's possible that if you didn't have caffeine while pregnant, and haven't had caffeine before while BF, that yes the caffeine you ingested is effecting your son. Most likely the girls who drink regular coffee and bf have had a regular intake of caffeine, so the baby expects it, and is used to it. I don't know how you were throughout your pregnancy with caffeine, but it's a theory, anyway.
  • hmmm, if you NEVER drink caffeine it probably is effecting your LO.

I drank coffee all through pregnancy and I drink even more now that he's an outie. It never affects my DS, but his little system might just be used to all the caffeine.

  • Some babies are just sensitive to any amounts of caffiene. I drank caffiene my whole pregnancy and eased it in slowly while BFing. It doesn't seem to bother her so now I have a small cup every morning.
  • Thanks girls!  It makes sense that he's having trouble because we're usually caffeine-free.  We could be in for a long night.  :)
