At my wit's end...HELP!

My DS is 4 weeks tomorrow. We haven't had any problems with him at all, none...until the last few days. He has been extremely fussy off and on since Friday. At first picking him up, distracting him, rocking him, etc. all seemed to work just fine, no big deal.

Today is a completely different story. He has been awake for roughly 6 hours straight, the longest time for him so far, and nothing seems to work for very long. We tried tummy time with toys and me talking to him at eye level, rocking, feeding with a bottle of breastmilk (since I had just pumped), changing diapers, everything! The only thing that calmed him down was skin on skin while he was "playing" with my nipples. I don't want to encourage this so we stopped.

Is he still just overstimulated from Thanksgiving? or do you think it's the stress my SIL is putting on me while she is visiting? Background on SIL: Friday she said she would just give DS water if he fussed, I said no and she still said she would do it anyway and today while getting up from tummy time with him screaming she came in and took him out of my arms saying "Let me do it." Then when I got pissed cause she took my baby away from me, she stormed out for a bit.

Any advice? Sorry this got long...I guess it turned into a vent kind of as well.

  • Do not let her give him water

  • I know that. She thought it was funny that I got so aggitated after she said that. DH finally told her just do as I say since I'm the mommy. That just started the whole me stressing out part.
  • Best thing to do is stay calm, it is your baby you know what is best. All babies get fussy it will pass. My little man went through 2 weeks of being cranky, at times I had to be a pacifier just to have 10 minuted of quiet.
  • We went through a similar thing and I actually called the nurses at the hospital (they gave us the # for ANY questions) and I could hear a chuckle in their voices as they said, "He's just having a fussy time."  I took this to mean, these times just happen.....

That said, Have you tried a pacifier?

  • We actually have tried a pacifier. Normally he's fine with them, but he won't take that either. The only thing he will let in his mouth is my boob.

  • growth spurt maybe...thats why nursing calms himm...its a thought anyway cause i was there about 2 weeks ago and my LO is almost 7 weeks
  • Mine has been super fussy off and on for about 2 weeks now ( hes 6 weeks ). He has days where he'll stay awake for 6 + hrs and then be hysterical. I cant figure it out either. Your not alone.... Im hoping its a growth spurt
  • Never thought I'd say this, but please be a growth spurt then so this can end soon! I'm still adjusting to taking care of him by myself throughout the day and I don't know if I could do this all week. On a happier note, after a long car drive, a jaunt around Target and some creepy stuffed seahorse toy and plays music (randomly found by DH touching everything in Target that could make noise) DS is sleeping! Yay!
  • Sometimes baby just needs to be put down! Especially if overstimulated. Also, water is a major MAJOR no-no. Stand up for your baby and kick SIL out.
