Is a robe necessary in hospital?

I don't own a robe. I used to and never wore it, so I tossed it a while ago.

I don't really want to waste money on a robe when I know I will never wear it. But my mom is insisting I must have one, so I can cover myself while I walk the halls in a backless hospital gown (Are the ones they give you really backless?) and have visitors.

I plan to pack some comfy pyjamas and loose yoga pants for after, but do I need a robe for during labour?

Seems like a waste to me but I also don't want my bare ass hanging out for the world to see the entire time.

Re: Is a robe necessary in hospital?

  • Yes, they're backless with a tie that doesn't stay shut :-)

Don't waste your money on one...they can give you a second gown to flip around the other way so your rear is covered :-)  Also, after you deliver, you can wear your own PJ's around.  I had a nice comfy pair of pants and a thermal shirt I wore (it buttoned on top for BF-ing).

  • I was really glad I had one.  I went and bought one at target for $16 and was really happy I did.  I used it more than I thought I would.
  • My hospital gave you a robe to wear over the gown, I had so much bleeding that I just wore the gown and hospital robe the entire 4 days because I didn't want to ruin my PJs and robe I had brought...I would definitely not buy one.

  • Don't waste your money.  I was only in the hospital for about 28 hours after delivery (one night), and I never even put pants on til I was leaving.  I was still bleeding out of my pads/underwear.  I liked not having to worry about it!!
  • I didn't have a robe.  The gown they gave me for labour was backless but they gave me 2 so I could wear one backwards and be covered up.  I laboured in the shower though so it really didn't matter!

The post delivery gowns tied up so that I was completely covered.  I was also in "normal" clothes (yoga pants and mat tanks) the day after delivery.

  • It's a waste. I brought mine, but never used it.

From my experience (epidural), I was in bed most of the time anyway, so no one even came close to seeing my bare behind.

  • I bought one just for the hospital and I never even used it.

  • They gave me a robe at the hospital. The only time I wore it was after a shower.

  • I never needed one before or after labor.  I didn't stand or walk around in the robe.  I would see if the hospital can give you something.  It's nice to not have to worry about bleeding on your own stuff.  I wore what they gave me until the day I left.
  • They are backless, I used a blanket to cover the back... there was no one else in the hallways anyway so it really wouldn't matter.

I wouldn't buy one if you wont use it, I have one and didn't bring it and didn't miss it.

  • My gown tied in the back but covered my ass.  I was stuck in bed anyway since I was induced so the only people I semi-flashed moving to the bathroom and back were my DH and the nurses.  After I gave birth and showered (heaven!) I put on my own PJs.  I wouldn't have used a robe even if I had brought one.
