I don't own a robe. I used to and never wore it, so I tossed it a while ago.
I don't really want to waste money on a robe when I know I will never wear it. But my mom is insisting I must have one, so I can cover myself while I walk the halls in a backless hospital gown (Are the ones they give you really backless?) and have visitors.
I plan to pack some comfy pyjamas and loose yoga pants for after, but do I need a robe for during labour?
Seems like a waste to me but I also don't want my bare ass hanging out for the world to see the entire time.
Re: Is a robe necessary in hospital?
Yes, they're backless with a tie that doesn't stay shut :-)
Don't waste your money on one...they can give you a second gown to flip around the other way so your rear is covered :-) Also, after you deliver, you can wear your own PJ's around. I had a nice comfy pair of pants and a thermal shirt I wore (it buttoned on top for BF-ing).

I didn't have a robe. The gown they gave me for labour was backless but they gave me 2 so I could wear one backwards and be covered up. I laboured in the shower though so it really didn't matter!
The post delivery gowns tied up so that I was completely covered. I was also in "normal" clothes (yoga pants and mat tanks) the day after delivery.
It's a waste. I brought mine, but never used it.
From my experience (epidural), I was in bed most of the time anyway, so no one even came close to seeing my bare behind.
They are backless, I used a blanket to cover the back... there was no one else in the hallways anyway so it really wouldn't matter.
I wouldn't buy one if you wont use it, I have one and didn't bring it and didn't miss it.
