Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When does the colic end? :(

I'm so frustrated and at my wit's end.  My son started out rarely crying, but now he cries all the time.  I've had him checked out, and there is nothing wrong with him.  He doesn't have a fever (although gas may play a factor sometimes, I am guessing).  He eats every three hours (breast or bottle), but after he eats, he cried, cries, cries!  I have tried feeding him more than normal (but then he spits it all back up); pacifiers (silicone and human); rocking; singing; strolling around the neighborhood; car seat; swing, bouncy seat; etc.  I don't know what to do. He takes two hours of consoling -- following feeding -- to go to sleep, and sometimes he doesn't sleep at all between feedings.  AND he mainly takes only short catnaps during the day. And I am on my own while hubby is in Iraq, so this is really difficult.  I have SO much respect for the single moms!  I will have had only six weeks as a "single mom," but this is so difficult.  I get no relief from his crying, and I feel horrible that I can't console him. :(  Please tell me it gets better.  I don't know what to do for him, and it makes me sad.

  • I'm going through pretty much the same thing.  I heard it peaks around 6-8 weeks and then gets better.

Hang in there!  There are some good suggestions on kellymom for helping to comfort him.

  • for us, colic was a 7-8 month endeavor. But for most people, it's about 3 months.

Things that really helped were to play music and dance with him, put him in the frontpack and walk with him and or vacuum while he was in there, or put him in his swing while I ran the vacuum.

IT's hard. and I can not imagine going through colic alone. Good luck, I hope it passes fast for you

  • When our DD is inconsolable the only thing that works is bouncing with her on an exercise ball (like a birthing ball).  We just hold her and bounce.  It usually takes about a min for the crying to stop and about 10-15 min for her to go to sleep.  It can be a killer on your back, but it's better than a screaming baby.  Hope this gets better for you soon!
  • My LO loves the sound of a vacuum or running water and also holding her on her side with a paci in her mouth was the only way to get her to sleep for a while because of belly issues. I actually slept on the couch holding her on her side with pillows on both sides of us when I was desperate. I've heard colic is over by 4 months....GL!!

  • I've heard 12 weeks is when it is usually over - I hope its over faster for you!!  Our DS gets "colicky" at night - his fussy time is way more intense than other babies I've experienced.  Sometimes, when nothing else works we prop him up in the boppy and turn on 'his' hairdryer.  He doesn't sleep but he does get quiet.  If anything, it gives me some peace for a few minutes.

If I could offer you my husband's uncle, I would.  That man is the baby whisperer and can put literally any child to sleep.  He's amazing.  Seriously, strangers (friends of friends) call him begging to come over and have him hold their kids (this has really happened).  I don't know how he does it but he does.

  • We felt the same way around 3 weeks.  However, we have only had a few rough nights experiencing exactly what you described.  He is probably just in his growth spurt.  I just keep rotating all the things I think he might need like you described.  I also ended up sleeping with him on my chest a few nights because he FINALLY seemed content.  Good luck to you!! It will pass!
  • I would call the dr.  Could be reflux or an allergy to milk proteins which can affect if they are breast or bottle fed.  Mine has the allergy and I'm lucky my dr. had me try the hypoallergenic formula instead of saying "she's colicy, deal with it."  She started her symptoms around 3 weeks old.... hardly napping, crying between feedings, spitting up...
  • Many hugs to you. I went thru the same thing with my first, right down to the deployment. DS ended up having multiple food allergies. Does your son have any symptoms other than the crying? DS also had eczema and green stool. Before we figured that out, the only thing that calmed DS was a tight swaddle and me swaying to classical music. Another possibility is silent reflux. If not that, the Dr. Sears book has some tips on helping the high needs baby. I hope this passes quickly.

P.S. Love the name Liam! We would have loved that name for DS2, except DS1 is William.
