C-Sections & TTC again

My aunt is a nurse at an OB's office and she just told me that the doctors in her office tell people they like them to wait at least a year, preferably two years, to start TTC again after a C/S.  There's apparently a lesser chance of rupturing if you wait.

That was the first time I'd heard that - just wondering if anyone else has heard the same thing?

My dreams of having my LO's super close together just went out the window.

  • I've heard they like you to wait a year.

  • I believe our office recommends 12 months min.

  • my sons are 22 months apart. first one a c-section, this one a VBAC. No one said a word to me about TTC timelines.

The body has an amazing ability to heal... and Dr's have an amazing way of trying to cover their own ass from a malpractice lawsuit.

  • My OB told me to wait a year.
  • I've never heard this!  I wonder if it's true now, because I also hoped to have ours about 18 months apart.  You would think that's something my OB would have told me when I said to him that I want to have the next one not too soon after.

or trying to spare your life.  rupture=death quite frequently, or loss of your ute

  • My Dr asked that we wait at least one year before TTC for safety reasons. My pregnancy wasn't planned and I had a variety of little things go awry that added up to big things going awry during delivery. My placenta was rupturing just before my C-Section, so we barely averted a big problem. We plan on waiting even longer but pregnancy does alot to your body and so does a C-Section.

You always have the right to do what you feel is best for your body but you can also talk it over with your Dr in more detail.

  • After I had DS, doc said I could TTC right away - no waiting period after my c-section.

This is inaccurate.  Most "ruptures" are actually asymptomatic dehiscences.

Your risk of dying from a rupture of the uterus is approximately 0.0095%, or  9.5 in 100,000 VBAC deliveries (according to a 2001 study published in Obstetrics and Gynecology).

Your risk of needing a c-section for some other problem (fetal distress, cord prolapse, etc.)  is approximately 30x greater than a need for cesarean delivery due to uterine rupture.

This is just blatantly false and anyone who has done any amount of research on TTC after a c/s would know that.  The chance of rupture is really quite small.  Please try actually researching things before you start spouting off inaccurate information.

To the OP, you will find that as with most things, a lot of OBs will have different opinions on when to TTC after a c/s.  My OB prefers 18 months between deliveries if you wish to attempt a VBAC, but he doesn't have any true preference if you are going to have a repeat c/s.  Talk to your OB and see what their opinion is and the reasoning behind it.  And do your own research.

  • My OB said 18 months.
