increasing formula intake question..

My LO is on 4 ounces but lately, I think he must be hitting another spurt because he still wants more after those 4 and so I wind up giving him 2 more ounces about an hour after. When I give him these 2 ounces, he falls asleep and won't eat. Has this happened to anyone? If yes, what did you do so he'd finish eating and not wake up and be starving. Also, he spits up a lot so I'm wondering, if he's eating it and spitting it up later (not that much but enough throughout the day that I think he's hungry faster), then he's hungry more often. Ugh, so frusterating because I'm sick and I don't want him to get sick and I just want him to stop being fussy. He seems to only calm down when I feed him. My SIL thinks he needs to be on 5 oz now not 4, but he's having a hard time staying awake for the last part of it!

Re: increasing formula intake question..

  • For a while we had to wake LO up to get him to take that extra ounce.  Now he doesn't fall asleep before drinking it.  Try striping LO down to the diaper, or tickling LO's feet to wake him up.  That's what we had to do :-)

ETA: If he's spitting up after the extra oz or two, then his tummy is too full.  Our Pedi said if he's wanting more a couple hours later, it's because he's still hungry but his belly can't handle 5 or 6oz all at one time.

  • Will he eat in his sleep?  Sometimes if I just gently push the bottle into DS' mouth he will eat without waking up.
  • Try making a bigger bottle at first and see how much he'll take; he'll stop when he's full which could be at 4 or 5oz..  When LO started eating more than 4 oz that's what we did b/c we weren't always sure if at that feeding he was going to eat 4 or 5 oz.  Now he will always eat at least 5 and sometimes 6oz.
