swaddling at night?

We haven't really swaddled P at night since we came home from the hospital.  She has been sleeping in her carseat because of her reflux so I lay a soft blanket under her so the straps don't hurt her and wrap it over her feet.

I remebered reading that someones LO sleeps longer if swaddled, I told Dh and he was all over it.  She slept from 11ish to 4.

Granted she did sleep two 5 hour stretches over a week ago but she hadn't since then.  She has been up every 2 hours, constantly except for those two nights.

I'm wondering if it was coincidence or if swaddling makes them sleep better & longer.

Re: swaddling at night?

  • Yes, ours definitely sleeps better when swaddled. We have swaddled him every night since we came home from the hospital, he loves it.

  • Yes, we ALWAYS swaddle him...day and night naps.  If we don't, he stirs more and wakes himself up b/c his arms move around.  He tries to pull his hands up towards his mouth, but they are still close to his body so they can't be extended.  He sleeps much better.

  • We just started swaddling DS about a week ago.  Up until then I thought he didn't like it, but now we get 7-8 hour stretches out of him.

  • We have always swaddled LO at night and she sleeps 6-8 hrs every night since the 2nd week home.
  • We always swaddle DD at night.  She sleeps much longer.  DD has been congested for the past week so we swaddle her and put her in the swing to sleep at night so she's more upright.  We don't turn the swing on, and we don't buckle her in but she sleeps 6-7 hrs that way.

  • When DS is swaddled, he'll sleep about 2 hours and then wakes up fussing trying to get out of it, and if he can't get his arms out, he'll start crying. The second I open him up, he usually falls right to sleep and seems to sleep longer when not swaddled.

  • my LO is 11 weeks and I still swaddle her at night.... she is generally sleeping 6 pm to 5 am without waking up.   I will keep swaddling for a while because I am going back to work tomorrow.
