Increasnig nipple flow

How do you know when to go up a level?

Re: Increasnig nipple flow

  • We knew to go up a level because DD acted frustrated and had to work REALLY hard to get out what she wanted.  She was also taking too long to finish a bottle (like 30 to 45 min)  We switched to level 2's at around 6 wks.

  • I was just wondering that this morning. I'm curious to see the responses.
  • we had to go up at 6 weeks to the day. DD went from taking a bottle w/out problems (I BF too) to throwing a huge fit after 3 or 4 sucks everytime we tried to give it to her. This happened completely overnight for us. Good thing is when we got new nipples everything went back to normal.
  • It was just taking way too long for her to eat and she would get so frustrated.  So we uped it at about 9 weeks.  I took a few weeks to transition, but she is much happier.

  • What did you all increase it to? Medium flow?
  • If you BF you stay with a slow flow until you wean. Going to a faster nipple will make LO's draw weak hurting your supply.

They are all called something different depending on which brand you use. For us, they were called level 2.

I use avent and ventair and w/ avent I went to stage 2 which says 1 mo+. With ventaire I had to buy playtex dropins medium flow nipples. They fit perfectly but playtex doesnt make a medium flow specifically for ventaire. the playtex medium flow say 3-6 mos but she was perfectly happy with them.

FWIW I have had no issues with supply or BFing since I switched nipples 5 days ago.  I BF 90% of the time right now, but this was my last week off work. She will be getting pumped milk 90% of the time after this week starts so it might not have had time to be an issue with me. We were giving her bottles once or twice a day to get her used to it and having MIL give her one whenever she is here since she will be watching her.

I wasnt sure why or what to do at first when she started freaking out but when I thought about how fast I see the milk come out of my own nipples when I do pump that made me think the bottle nipple flow might have been too slow for her.

Oh this is really helpful. We use ventaire bottles too. I will check into this. Thanks!

I went to 3 different stores looking at nipples and they had slow and fast for ventaire and slow medium and fast for dropins. I just kept thinking they might have been out of them or something, but when I looked at how similar the nipples for both were I asked a lady at BRU and she said they didnt make medium for ventaire and you just had to buy medium for dropins and they will fit perfectly - she was right :)

Crap...I just realized that this may not work for us. We use the standard size ventaire bottles instead of the wide ones. DD takes those so much better. That's really good info to know though - we might just have to try it with the wide variety when it's time to move up a nipple size.

It has only been 5 days. It takes about a week for the baby to adjust the easier suck of the bottle to your nipple and  realize they do not have to suck as hard. Then your breasts will take a few days to respond. Your supply may also drop when you are not with LO 24/7. You do what you have to do to make it work be it BM or Formula. I had to BF #1 because of vomiting issues and I had MAJOR supply issues. I had to work with a LC for 13 months just to keep up. #2 I did fine with supply, even had over supply until I went back to work.  Just passing on what I learned in 2 years of working with Lactation Consultants. If it does not happen to you, which I hope it does not...it is rare.

Im just hoping that it wont do too much damage since I'll be pumping most of the time anyway now. I know Ill probably face supply issues anyway whether it be too much or too little once I start pumping at work. At least this is what I have heard so far - either people do it too little or too much and things get all out of whack. Thanks for the advice.

I didnt think about that - we do use the wide bottles. Im not sure if its the same situation with the standard or not.

Thanks for the info as well. I was at target the other day and was wondering about this.
