Is it bad to let LO "sleep in"?

Meaning, does it mess with their little internal schedule/cycles? DD has been waking for the day around 7am the past few weeks but last night we had a rough night and she was up every 2-3 hours (had prev been sleeping 5-7). When she fed around 7am this morning I didn't get right up with her but instead let her fall right back asleep on my chest where we all konked out until 9:30am. She'd gotten herself into a pretty nice rhythm the last week with wake up and bedtime so I'm just wondering how much letting her sleep in today might mess with it.

  • I actually think it might help with bedtime.  When DD naps well during the day (or even when she sleeps in)  she gets a better nights sleep the next night.  I asked the pedi this question one time and she told me that she has found that sleep begets sleep.   I don't see anything wrong with letting your LO "sleep in."

  • I totally agree with PP, let them sleep in.

Besides, the rule of newborn parenting is, once you've got it all firgured out, it all changes. ;o)

  • I don't think it's bad.  I think it's good to let them get their rest.  We try to let DS sleep as long as we can in the mornings.  I usually take him to daycare but if he's still sleeping or doesn't wake up in time enough for me to take him then dh will take him since dh leaves the house after I do.  I'm not really trying to enforce a schedule on him just yet.  I want him to get the rest he needs at this age.

    This!

  • I sleep in with her until about 11am, I also need to catch up on sleep.
  • DD usually sleeps until 9. No matter when she wakes to eat at night, even if it's at 8am, she'll still go right back down until 9. Then she's up for an hour and is back down for a 2.5 hour nap usually.

Works for us! DD1 (21 months) goes to bed at 9 and is up between 8-9 every day. She used to sleep 9-9 until pretty recently.
