Babies: 0 - 3 Months

day/night confusion...I need help.

It's like I have two different babies.  DD is 3 weeks and has a serious case of day/night confusion.  During the day, she eats and sleeps.  She's up for about 2 hours.  She's quiet, snuggles, and is an awesome baby.  Once midnight strikes, she's grunting and growling in her sleep.  I mean, it is LOUD!  I make sure she's fed, changed, and swaddled.  I've tried the bouncer, boppy, crib, holding her, us laying on the floor, walking, white noise, pacifier, etc.  She just looks at me and cries.

Does anyone have a tip for me?  I know she can be a good baby bc I see it alllllll day long.

  • Sounds very much like my baby, he appears to be going thru a growth spurt, they tend to get very fussy on those periods. I also wonder why is he doing this grunting and noise making, to me it looks like he is making a great effort to poop or get rid of gas...mine does calm down when I hold him and put his chest against mine and lay down in bed or in a reclined chair, I rub his back and, voila, he falls asleep immediately. I'm sorry I am not of much help, I'd like to see responses to your post, GL!

  • She's really young and new to the world.  She's learning the difference between night and day.  She's only 3 weeks old.  They start to get the hang of the difference between night and day around 6 weeks or so.  Newborn babies sleep for the most part of the day, enforcing a schedule will get you nowhere.

  • The big thing is to keep the environments different.  Keep the noise level in the house normal during the day, even when LO naps.  Use regular voices, TV at regular volume, run the washer.  Then at night, keep it dark and quiet, even when LO is up.  Use a whisper if you must, try not to make eye contact with LO.  It will still take a while for her to get it, but this helped us!
  • My baby also has day/night confusion, so I started modifying his day sleep.  I wake him up after about 1- 1 1/2 hours instead of letting him sleep his usual 2 - 2 1/2 hours.  I try to feed him a lot too during the day and will give him a bottle before he sleeps so he won't wake up from hunger.  He still wakes up at night, but I've actually gotten longer stretches of sleep at night.  He actually slept for 4 hours last night!  Hopefullyhe will keep it up!  Good luck to you!  I've also read Baby Whisperer, Happiest Baby on the Block and Baby Wise for sleep tips.

  • You just described my LO as well.  My poor DH has been taking the first shift so I can get some sleep and he gives her a bottle that I pump.  He is always telling me how she is so fussy.  When its my turn, she eats and sleeps lol.

This. But, then again, it doesn't matter. This ?? is asked 1.5 million times a day. It is what it is.

That's probably b/c there's 1.5 million of us on this website.  Some of us have newborns.  I don't know about everyone else, but I'm exhausted and don't feel like myself at all.  It's a lot easier to post something on my own and check it.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

  • I agree with the "you just have to roll with it" sentiment. They are the boss for the first 6 weeks+ in terms of scheduling.

Bro, but look how many ants are on this trash can...
