I've had a terrible cold for the past week. The cough is killing me - it's making it hard for me to get more than 3-4 broken hours of sleep a night. Robitussin is on my "safe meds" list from the OB, but doesn't help much. I've also been using a cool mist vaporizer, plug-in vaporizer, and Vick's Vaporub. None of them really seem to make much of a difference. The cough is so bad that I feel like I've pulled a muscle or two in my abdomen, and it hurts every time I cough now. Of course it's the holiday weekend and my OB's office has been closed, and I don't feel right bugging the on call doctor for this (not that there's anything s/he could probably give me anyway, right?).
Anyway, one thing that has been providing some relief is those Shower Soother things that you put in the shower and they release a vapor when the water hits them. The active ingredients are eucalyptus, menthol, and camphor. I had DH pick some more up at the store for me, but the generic brand he got says not to use during pregnancy. The Sudafed brand (which I've been using) has the same active ingredients but doesn't say not to use during pregnancy. Anyone have any idea why these would be off-limits?
Re: Shower soothers?
Call your doctor. I had a terrible cold with a terrible cough right about the same time as you are right now, and what the doctor said is that I had started to accumulate fluid in my lungs and was prescribed albuterol and anti-biotics. If I had not gone to the doctor, then I probably would have developed pneumonia from the fluid in my lungs.
I don't see why. Honestly, I would just keep using them until I was told otherwise by the doctor.
I've had lots of cold/allergy problems the last couple of weeks, as well. I've been taking benedryl every night. I normally end up waking up halfway through the night and take some more, but I swear, I've been getting better sleep than I've gotten in the last three months.
Regular sudaphed (not PE) is safe, too.
