Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Should I be worried?

I recently gave birth to my daughter on the 22nd and she had the black tarry poop while at hospital and day after. Now her poop has become very watery as if she peed and its dark yellow and instead of poop there are just little mushy pieces. I am breastfeeding, but had to supplement as well several times with Similac advance both in hospital and at home. I don't know if this is normal as I have taken her to doc and he said it was normal. She also has been sneezing alot, even right after birth in hospital and seems to have a runny nose. Again her pedi said it was normal, but I'm just worried it might be something since now after leaving the hospital both my DH and I have what seems to be a cold. I will more than likely take DD to another pedi because every concern I've voiced to her current one is dismissed with a it's normal. I don't feel like they are really looking into the issues. They had me go in three times to office and drew blood from DD each time because she had slight jaundice, and after each visit I was told they were going to check results, finally after third visit of them checking results, they had me go in again. I had to wait over and hour in a room with coughing sick people just to tell me to put my daughter in indirect sunlight! Sorry if long and TIA!

Re: Should I be worried?

  • my LO has the same sneezing thing too after 4 weeks he is still sneezing all the time but has not had a runny nose. I wouldnt be worried about a cold or sickness unless your LO is fussy or has a temp. But I know what you mean about the sneezing, my DH still thinks LO is allergic to him LOL :(

  • The BM are normal, this is the course that it takes.  My LO sneezes as well and breaths a little heavy.  My Pedi said that LO may have allergies and to just use Little Noses and then the ball syringe a couple of min. after it.

My friends LO that had jaundice was told to just put him in direct sunlight as well.  My LO had jaundice as well but I also had a c/s.  Due to my extended stay they put him under the blue light and the glow blanket.

  • Why don't you trust your pedi's advice?

  • Those BM's sound normal for a breast fed newborn. And, my LO (and probably every other LO) sneezed at ton after she was born.  The pedi told us that it is her body's way of clearing out her lungs/nasal passages etc. Sounds like you need to chill a little. Especially since your pedi has already told you that both things are normal.

I would have written this exact same thing!

  • That all sounds very normal to me.  Babies sneeze a lot rigth after birth because they are trying to get rid of the fluid they inject while in the womb.  My little guy still sneezes a lot.  I think part of the reason babies sneeze so much is that it's the only way for them to clear out their nose, since they don't know to blow it into a tissue.  The poop you describe sounds perfect for a breastfed baby.
